Old Aurora is a mostly residential neighborhood on the West Bank of New Orleans, tucked into the Algiers community. Originally developed in the 1950s as Aurora Gardens, the area has continued to evolve through new construction and home renovations. Mature live oak trees shade its quiet streets, which are lined with a mix of midcentury bungalows, ranch-style homes, Colonial Revivals, New Traditionals and newer builds. Many properties offer three to five bedrooms, double-car garages and roomy yards, though buyers should be aware that some addresses fall within flood zones due to the neighborhood's proximity to the Mississippi River. Homebuyers often weigh Old Aurora against other 15th Ward neighborhoods like Tall Timbers, New Aurora, Whitney and Algiers Point, all of which share a suburban character and easier car access than much of the East Bank.
