A cozy residential community minutes from Lake Pontchartrain and on the edge of the campus of the University of New Orleans (UNO), St. Anthony offers an alternative for New Orleanians who want the convenience of downtown without the bustle and noise. "After Katrina, most of the homes in Gentilly were rebuilt and the neighborhoods are just houses," says Realtor Betsy Birdsong with EXP Realty. “It's less expensive for people working downtown than renting in the city, so there are lots of first-time homebuyers." The positioning between UNO and Dillard University makes it inviting for students, professionals and staff at those schools, which is reflected in the almost even mix of homeowners and renters. Homes in the area are a mix of single-family houses and duplexes, many of which sit on a raised foundation, a lesson learned from the past. The median build year of 2010 reflects the revival of the neighborhood, and newer homes feature newer materials designed to weather the balmy New Orleans climate better. "Lots of houses are being rebuilt with HardiPlank, which termites don't care for," says Birdsong. Styles range from raised cottages and town houses to the occasional ranch-style
