Rebirth. It’s a word that has defined New Orleans in the two decades following its worst natural disaster. And if one were to create a poster of places that embody that rebirth, the St. Claude neighborhood belongs on it. Though the neighborhood has not yet regained its pre-Katrina population of nearly 12,000 residents, it is very much on the rebound – as of 2022, there were 2,300 more people living in St. Claude than in 2010. Why the upswing? Because this is a neighborhood that is retaining some sense of New Orleans authenticity even as gentrification encroaches. “There’s a lot more tourist activity here than there was a decade ago, but it’s definitely a local hangout space,” says artist Kate Kuen, a St. Claude resident. Along with neighboring Bywater, St. Claude is part of the Bywater Historical District.
