Military members and civilians choose Nelson
Bordered by Fort Eustis and the Felker Army Airfield, the Nelson neighborhood is a calm community hidden behind Warwick Boulevard and local shopping centers. “It’s either military folks living here or people who have been here for generations,” says Taylor Ange, a Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate. When the weekend rolls around, residents are steps away from a full day of fishing near Balthrope Marsh or Denbigh Park. Those who want to hang out in downtown Newport News can hop in their cars and be at the Oyster Point mall in under half an hour. “Nelson is in a better area of Newport News. It’s very nice, quiet and reasonably priced,” says Patrick Istilart, a Realtor with 1st Advantage Realty, LLC who has over three years of real estate experience. Although residents live surrounded by tall trees, rolling water and serene streets, they’re never too far from a busy day of shopping, dining or recreation.

Young families settle into '70s Colonial Revivals
Most Colonial Revivals, split-levels and ranch-style homes in this heavily wooded enclave were built in the late ‘60s and ‘70s. The homes often feature well-maintained yards with ample room for backyard pools and gardens. “The prices are usually $350,000 to $450,000. Newport News has a high turnover rate with the military, but Nelson sees a mix of long-term and short-term residents. And there are a lot of young families with kids there,” Istilart says. A larger four- or five-bedroom home can also range from $400,000 to $600,000. Some sit along the Warick River with private boat docks to give fishing enthusiasts unfettered access to the water. Residents who want to go for a bike ride through the neighborhood have to bike in the street since most roads have sidewalks on one side or none at all. The CAP Index gives Nelson a 2 out of 10 crime score, with 4 being the national average.

Fishing and boating at Denbigh Park
The Nelson neighborhood has its own private retreat in the south half of the community: Denbigh Park. Tucked along the Warwick River, Denbigh Park has over 13 acres of space and a boat ramp residents use for fishing and boating. Visitors also leave their cars in the public parking lot before going on a walk along the boardwalk that winds through the marsh. Grissom Library organizes monthly meetups, such as a writer’s workshop and film screenings, for those who prefer air-conditioned fun.

Burgers and brews at Craft 60 Taphouse & Grill
Craft 60 Taphouse & Grill, located in the DW Center, stays busy during lunch, dinner and happy hour. Their menu is stuffed with burgers, craft beers, cocktails and desserts. “Dino’s Pizza Shop has been here forever, and everyone knows it,” says Ange. The family-owned spot has been serving up New York-style pies since 1972. Residents can make grocery runs at Food Lion or go to the Jefferson Commons Shopping Center on Jefferson Avenue to visit stores such as Trader Joe's, Old Navy or HomeGoods.

Every September, locals gather at Denbigh High School to kick off the Denbigh Day Parade and Festival. The parade runs down to the Courthouse Way Community Center, where parade-goers of all ages hear live music, see educational displays and shop from local vendors.
Quick commutes to downtown or Fort Eustis
Without any nearby bus routes, Nelson homeowners drive 8 miles to downtown Newport News. In addition to living close to downtown, residents can also drive 4 miles to catch a flight at the nearby Newport News/Williamsburg Airport or 7 miles to report to Fort Eustis and the Felker Army Airfield. Four churches sit within walking distance from some homes, including the St. Jerome Catholic Church, founded in 1966, and the non-denominational Denbigh Christian Church, founded in 1972.

Nearby medical care and plane noise
Although this area is primarily residential, those needing medical care can visit Mary Immaculate Hospital, a short 5 miles away on McManus Boulevard. Istilart also mentions the homes sit higher up, so flooding isn’t a concern with the Warwick River nearby. He also said he didn’t hear any plane activity from the Felker Army Airfield while he was in the area and emphasizes it’s a quiet neighborhood.
Nelson is known for being a quiet safe community, with no noise from Felker Army base.
