A few decades ago, people in Montgomery County, Maryland, might not have recognized the name North Potomac. However, the name was bestowed on the thousands of homes constructed since the ‘80s in the unincorporated area 20 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. “There’s no historic town there,” explains Reist Corp. broker and owner Dick Stoner, who lives in nearby Rockville. “It’s a suburban designation for an area between Rockville, Gaithersburg and Potomac.” North Potomac consists of thousands of expansive homes, largely inhabited by college graduates who work high-wage jobs. The neighborhood sits within the Great Seneca Science Corridor, a cluster of thousands of life sciences jobs that runs through Montgomery County. The University of Maryland Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research sits in the neighborhood, while Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center and Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County campus border it. “People live here for all of the business and educational opportunities,” says Alecia Scott, a Realtor and team leader with Long & Foster Real Estate. Scott has sold real estate in Montgomery County for more than 15 years.

Muddy Branch Greenway
Muddy Branch Greenway Trail winds through the heart of the neighborhood, following the path of a stream of the same name. Cyclists, hikers and dog walkers use the 9-mile trail to escape the suburbs, trading views of subdivisions with views of streambeds, deer and the remains of long-shuttered mills. While the trail is a getaway from the residential areas, Aberdeen Local Park is visible from some residents’ backyards. The county park features a playground, basketball courts and tennis courts. When the snow falls in the winter, kids hit the well-known sledding hills in the area, including those in the Dufief Mill subdivision and at Robert Frost Middle School.

Spacious homes in North Potomac
The landscape is dominated by detached single-family homes. These spacious Colonial Revivals and split-level homes average more than 4,000 square feet in size, covering much of their medium-sized lots. Homes were generally built in the last 40 years, but vintage-style streetlamps, wooden farm fencing and colonial-inspired architecture create an antique charm. Prices vary between the high $500,000s for a three-bedroom ranch home and $2.75 million for a six-bedroom house on a 5-acre lot. There are also hundreds of townhouses, with a price range of $360,000 to $950,000. FEMA identifies flood zones around the Muddy Branch stream, so homebuyers may want to check if houses are in these zones.

Italian flavors at Gemelli’s market
Shopping centers along Darnestown Road are where shoppers can pick up groceries at Giant Food supermarket or Trader Joe’s before stopping by the pharmacy. Residents can shop local at Gemelli’s Italian Food Market, which sells homemade pastas and sausages. In addition to stocking up on fresh ingredients, customers can get a whole meal thanks to Gemelli’s pizza ovens. The same shopping centers house chain eateries and casual restaurants, such as Burrito Ranchero Mexican Grill. More restaurant options are available less than a mile away at Fallsgrove Village Center in Rockville. Churches are scattered along Darnestown Road, with a neighborhood synagogue off Travilah Road.

Teens get IT certified at Wootton High School
Children are zoned to Montgomery County Public Schools, ranked the second-best school district in the state by Niche. Kids may start at DuFief Elementary School and Robert Frost Middle School, each graded an A by Niche. A-plus-rated Thomas S.
