Access to well-regarded schools, fine dining and convenient shopping is universal here, but residents enjoy a broad range of options for life at home, too. 20th century homes and more recent townhouses
The earliest single-family homes in Northbrook date back to the 1920s, but development in the area took off between the 1950s and 1970s. Properties built from the 1980s onward are rarer and usually cost more. The area’s median home value of $790,000 sits far above national and state levels, but is comparable to median values in nearby communities like Northfield and Glenview. Townhomes and condos round out Northbrook’s home selections, with a similar balance between larger luxury units and smaller properties. Most of these properties are newer than their single-family counterparts.

Elementary and middle school students are split between several local districts within Northbrook and the surrounding area. These include Northbrook Elementary School District No. 27, Northbrook School District No. 28 and Northbrook-Glenview School District No. 30, which all hold A grades on Niche and have individual schools with grades of A-minus or higher on the platform. Most of the community’s older students are served by the A-plus ranked Glenbrook North High School.
Middlefork Primary School is a highly rated public school in Northfield serving grades PK-3.

Golfing and events at the local parks
The village’s park district includes 23 parks and a variety of additional facilities. "Village Green Park is popular," says Dornan. "There are always festivities there over the summer." Popular parks in town include Techny Prairie Park and Fields, an outdoor retreat with a dedicated nature walk area and a restored prairie area; the park also includes the nine-hole Anetsberger Golf Course, multipurpose fields for soccer and lacrosse, and a large skate park.
Additionally, the Park District runs a second public golf course: Heritage Oaks Golf Club on Dundee Road. The nine-hole Willow Hill Golf Course is independently owned but also offers open admission. In addition to golfing, the multipurpose Willow Hill Dome on the property hosts indoor flag football and soccer leagues for kids.

Along with Sunset Foods and Walgreens, a mix of local restaurants and well-known chain dining options sit along the curved roads and stone sidewalks in Downtown Northrbook. "The downtown area of Northbrook is thriving," Dornan says. Most of the area’s big box stores and major retailers are situated on the south side of the village along Willow Road. Well-known stops such as Target, Jewel-Osco, Mariano’s and Costco are among the options available.

Bicycle races and bowling in town
Annual events hosted in Northbrook include the Northbrook Grand Prix, a summer bike race where spectators gather downtown to watch professional cyclists speed around a closed city-street circuit. Brewfest draws local beer-makers and ale enthusiasts into Village Green Park for a day out each September. The village’s connections to neighboring North Shore communities like Glenview and Winnetka provide additional options for events beyond the village. The Northbrook Theatre, located on Walters Avenue on the west side of the community, regularly hosts community theater shows, professional productions and youth-led plays.
Many of the area’s churches, including Northbrook United Methodist, Grace Lutheran Church and Shermer Church, are close to Downtown Northbrook. Synagogues in the Northbrook area include Temple Beth-El, Congregation Beth Shalom and Lubavitch Chabad.

Connected to Chicagoland via Interstates 94 and 294
Interstates 94 and 294 are rough boundaries along the west, north and east sides of the village, with Willow Road rounding out the area on the south end. Northbrook residents are about 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, with I-94 as the most direct route into the city. Northbrook’s Metra station is on Shermer Road downtown. Pace buses are also available along Shermer Road and Willow Road.
For most residents, Endeavor Health Glenbrook Hospital is the closest medical center, about 4 miles south of the village center in Glenview. Vacation-goers and business travelers can catch flights from Chicago O'Hare International Airport, 13 miles south of the village via I-294.

Part of Chicagoland’s North Shore region along Lake Michigan, Glenbrook Countryside offers acres of land and customs builds while keeping close to Northbrook. The town itself features a tight-knit community focused around its school systems with local restaurants in its small downtown, but Glenbrook Countryside’s big properties and location on the opposite side of a forest preserve create a more private and quiet environment. “They’re half-acre lots, which is very unusual in the northern suburbs,” says broker Bryce Fuller with Baird and Warner Glenbrook. “I think people really enjoy the amount of space you get.” Still, residents are just a short drive from Northbrook, so they can attend the town’s farmers' markets, annual festivals and youth sports events.
Homes in Glenbrook Countryside feature custom builds with French and Colonial influences alongside modest ranches on half-acre lots that allow for spacious front yards and long driveways. “Glenbrook Countryside tends to draw more people who want newer construction homes but also want the land,” says Realtor Kati Spaniak with eXp Realty and Northbrook resident. Streets here have no sidewalks or streetlights, instead winding throughout the community to add to the unincorporated and private feel that residents like. The ranches typically list between $375,000 and $425,000, but the custom builds list between $875,000 and $1.3 million, with both options offering the same amount of land. However, Spaniak emphasizes that because Glenbrook Countryside is unincorporated from Northbrook, the taxes are lower than those in the town.
Even though Glenbrook Countryside is unincorporated from Northbrook, its students will still attend the town’s schools. “In general, Northbrook is a very school-focused community,” Spaniak says. “That’s how most people meet their friends—through the schools and sports events.” Westmoor School is one of the elementary schools, serving grades kindergarten through fifth. Students continue on to Northbrook Junior High School for grades sixth through eighth. Niche awards both schools an A. At Glenbrook North High School, or GBN to locals, students enrolled in Glenbrook Academy of International Studies receive a curriculum focused on history, English and foreign language. GBN may also look familiar, serving as the filming location and setting for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Breakfast Club.
Glenbrook Countryside’s homes center around Glenbrook Countryside Park, with a playground for kids, basketball courts, and a baseball diamond. Residents can take a stroll on the walking path shaded by trees. Along the southern border of the neighborhood is Sommes Preserves, where people can hike and bike through the protected woodlands and prairies. It’s also an excellent spot for birdwatching. Because Northbrook and Glenbrook Countryside are in the North Shore region of Chicagoland, residents can drive just 5 miles to Glencoe Beach to access Lake Michigan’s shoreline. Alongside swimming and kayaking, people can also play beach volleyball or cool off in the splash pad.
Because Glenbrook Countryside is more residential, people typically head into downtown Northbrook for shopping and dining. The Landmark Inn is a historical and cultural landmark, with the building dating back to 1885 and functioning as a longstanding casual American joint for the community. At Trattoria Oliverii, people can order their favorite pasta dishes while enjoying the fresh air on the restaurant’s outdoor patio. “In addition, we have the local grocery store, Sunset Foods,” Spaniak says. “It’s been there since I was a kid.” For more grocery shopping, the nearest Jewel-Osco is just 0.8 miles away along Waukegan Road. Northbrook Court is the town’s shopping mall, located just east of Glenbrook Countryside and featuring its own movie theater.
Glenbrook Countryside is just over 1.5 miles from Northbrook’s quaint downtown, accessible along Waukegan Road. Lake Cook Road runs east to west along the northern portion of the neighborhood, lined with shopping centers and grocery stores. “Just down the street is the Metra station that goes into downtown Chicago,” Fuller says, referring to the Lake Cook Road Metra stop. I-94 runs along the southern side of the neighborhood, connecting people to downtown Chicago, about 25 miles away. The traffic from this thoroughfare can be loud and may be noticeable to homes closer to it. Chicago O’Hare International Airport is 17 miles away, for those traveling beyond the North Shore and Chicagoland. The closest hospital is Advocate Condell Medical Center, about 14 miles away.
Because Glenbrook Countryside is so close to downtown Northbrook, residents can join the town’s events. From June to October, the Northbrook Farmers Market occurs every Wednesday morning and offers produce and artisan goods. For five days in July and August, Northbrook Days features live concerts and carnival rides. 2024 will be the 100th year of this celebration.
