At first glance, Northfield looks like many small cities in New Jersey; a tranquil tangle of single-family subdivisions pocketed by verdant parks. What sets this Atlantic County city apart is stated in its motto: Northfield is the Gateway to the Shore. “If you’re more than a few blocks from the beach in Margate or Ocean City, you still need to drive there. In Northfield, you can drive maybe eight minutes to the beach and buy a house for five times less money with a pool in the backyard,” says Eric Millstein, a platinum level agent at Soleil Sotheby’s International Realty who was born and raised South Jersey’s shore area. “It’s a wonderful community – good taxes, good schools, close to big box stores like Target. You name it, they have it. There’s so much allure.”

Northfield’s bayfront and parks, driving to Margate’s beaches
Much of the city’s bayfront falls along private property and the grounds of the Atlantic City Country Club, but some neighbors open their backyard gardens to those seeking views of salt marshes and scenic wetlands. Though residents may travel farther to their own South Shore beaches of choice, Margate’s sandy shoreline is open to those with season passes just across its namesake bridge. Supplementing the city’s excellent access to diverse waterfronts is a collection of classic community parks, with the hundreds of wooded, pond-filled acres at Birch Grove Park acting as a major centerpiece. Courts and fields serve Northfield’s youth Little League and other athletic associations, and cyclists travel between the namesake communities of the Pleasantville to Somers Point Bike Path.

Northfield’s midcentury and New Traditional suburban developments
Sidewalk-lined blocks in Northfield carry some of the city’s older residential developments, including classic prewar bungalows and midcentury Cape Cods or ranch-style homes. Newer, winding subdivisions are marked by the high square footage of New Traditional homes and lot sizes that can easily sustain trampolines and swimming pools in the backyard. Northfield City School District serves the community’s youngest students and earns a B-plus from Niche. Older kids attend the A-minus-rated Mainland Regional High School, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence recognized for robust academic and extracurricular programs. “Somers Point, Linwood and Northfield all send to Mainland Regional High School, and Northfield has the lowest taxes of the three,” Millstein notes.
Northfield Community Elementary School has 446 students in grades PK-4.
Mainland Regional High School has scored an overall A- grade from Niche.

Shopping and dining on Tilton Road
Tilton Road is Northfield’s main commercial thoroughfare, pocketed by grocery stores and specialty businesses. Diners enjoy plenty of locally owned restaurants, from shore town staples like pizzerias and ice cream shops to family-style Italian spots and bars. Strip malls anchored by big-box names stand closer to Egg Harbor Township. Several churches and a synagogue hold services throughout the city.

Events with the Northfield Cultural Committee
The Northfield Cultural Committee helps put on some of the city’s favorite annual traditions, from the summer concert series at Birch Grove Park’s bandstand to the Fourth of July parade, marked by free hot dogs and the traditional recognition of the citizen of the year and the first baby born to Northfield parents that year. Residents enjoy more regular movie nights in the reclining leather seats at Tilton Square Theatre.
Commuting to Atlantic County hubs and proximity to the Garden State Parkway
Commuters bound for Atlantic City’s major casino and AtlantiCare medical hubs have a roughly 8-mile drive over the bays on the Black Horse Pike. The major interstate connectors of the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway intersect just north of the city. NJ Transit buses offer another route to regional hubs like Shore Medical Center, roughly 5 miles away. Atlantic City International Airport is about 6 miles away.
Crime and weather data in Northfield
According to data reported by the Northfield Police Department to New Jersey’s Uniform Crime Reporting system, the city’s crime rate rose by more than 54% between 2021 and 2022. Despite the increase, the city’s 2022 rate of 674.8 offenses per 100,000 people was still roughly a fifth of Atlantic County’s overall crime rate of 3,199.5 per 100,000.
Northfield experiences all four seasons, including hot summers and snowy, below-freezing winters. Nor’easters are most common through the colder months, though Northfield’s elevation means that flooding is exceedingly rare.
