Originally the town was known by the biblical name of Sharon. It was later called Provo Bench; and then in 1914, the name was changed to Orem, after Walter C. Orem. Orem has an average elevation of 4756 feet and has the beautiful Utah Lake sitting on its eastern edge. This freshwater lake provides boating and camping along its beautiful shore. Mount Timpanogos is a popular attraction with a beautiful and steep hike up to historic caves that feature large stalactites and stalagmites. The Alpine school district consists of 16 elementary schools, three junior high schools, and three high schools. Various other private and extension campuses help provide a broad educational spectrum for its residents. UVU offers several different Bachelors and Masters degrees; and with its open enrollment policy, all applicants are accepted.

Offering a variety of businesses and stores, Orem also includes the oldest mall, opened March 1973, in Utah County. The Osmond family, a well-known singing group, resides in the Provo area-some right in Orem. Another notable resident is the current governor of Utah, Gary Herbert. Many well-known companies also started up in Orem, such as Novell, WordPerfect, Power Quest, Zuka juice, and many others.
