A charming village that is frozen in time
Located between the state capital of Trenton and the college town of Princeton, the quiet borough of Pennington is a charming borough frozen in time. Its vintage houses, vibrant downtown area, historic buildings and proximity to nature offer unparalleled serenity at this crossroads of the New York and Philadelphia metro areas. "I started to understand why New Jersey is The Garden State after I moved here," says Kim T. Ha, the director of Pennington Library. "There are so many roots to history and local farms that date back to the colonial period. Some family lines in town even span over six generations and date back to the 1800s." Impressive schools, a low crime score and community pride add to the desirability of the small area. However, even though it's slowly growing, the borough remains a close-knit one. Ha mentions, "Everyone knows everyone. There are close relationships between neighbors."

Walking trails and nature preserves
The athletic fields at Timberlane have baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, a full-size track and a football field for those who want to work on their sport of choice. Still, Pennington residents are more likely to be found out for a walk. Nature lovers enjoy walking the Pennington Loop Nature Trail, which stretches from Kunkel Park to the Baldwin State Wildlife Management Area and includes cliffside views of Stony Brook. To the east of town, the Curlis Lake Woods contains miles of trails popular for horseback riding, partly due to the nearby Mercer Meadows Equestrian Center, which gives horseback riding lessons to learners of all ages.

Outside of the downtown area, houses are sparse. Still, growing developments of tightly-packed homes are making space for an influx of people. "During the pandemic, many families and professionals moved to the area to get out of the city and work from home," Ha says. Small bungalows and ranches between stretches of fields sell for as low as $300,000, but the borough's large colonial homes and original farmhouses set it apart. Ha says, "Many homes and buildings here are historic and can't be renovated in certain ways to preserve the history." The further from the downtown area, the less common sidewalks are. However, residents have plenty of space to stretch their legs since some opulent homes that reach upwards of $1.5 million sit on multiple acres and feature inground pools. Townhouses and condos are available, ranging between $100,000 and $650,000.

Only the best for students of Pennington
Pennington's students attend Hopewell Valley Regional School District and can begin learning at Bear Tavern Elementary, rated an A-minus by Niche. Timberlane Middle School is rated an A-minus and backs up to an impressive athletics field complex. Hopewell Valley Central High School is in Pennington and is rated an A-plus. It has a competitive sports program, a college prep program, and a wide range of extracurriculars for students to join.

A drive to retail centers
Taking advantage of the wide-open spaces in the neighborhood is Hopewell Valley Vineyards, where locals can sip on a selection of rotating wines and listen to live music on the large sun-filled patio. Deli On a Bagel is the best spot in town to get a breakfast sandwich. Counter service with freshly baked bagels and sliced-to-order deli meats fuel customers before they head to the small Pennington Center shopping plaza for grocery trips and errands. Part of Pennington's charm is that it's separate from the noise of larger cities, so while residents must drive towards Trenton for familiar retail stores, they are okay with it as it keeps their neighborhood remote.

Commuter friendly options
Perfectly placed right above the border of Pennsylvania, Pennington is great for commuters. "I love it here. It's very close to both Philly and NYC," Ha says. Commuters have bus access to the transportation hub of Trenton, from which trains carry travelers to Philadelphia and New York City. Drivers can typically access New York within a 1.5-hour drive, while Philadelphia is just a 45-minute drive down Interstate 295. Capital Health Medical Center of Hopewell is close, and Trenton-Mercer Airport is just beyond the southern border.
Princeton Junction Train Station is crucial for residents who need to commute for work.
