A planned residential community 45 minutes from Center City
During the 1960s, the Korman Corporation first established Parkwood as a small residential borough centered around the historic Poquessing Valley Park. Since then, the neighborhood has grown into a much larger master-planned community with over 14,000 residents living in the original rows of red-brick townhomes. Parkwood’s walkable parks and tree-lined backyards attract young families looking to buy their first home outside the city. While the neighborhood’s natural beauty may feel far from downtown, Center City is less than an hour-long train ride away.

Classic Philly rowhomes and some detached colonials
Concrete sidewalks connect the winding residential streets throughout Parkwood. Like most Northeast Philly neighborhoods, Parkwood is full of 1960s red-brick rowhomes with front-facing garages. Although private parking is available, residents with multiple cars must park on the two-lane streets. Front yards are minimal in size, with cement stairways leading to shared porticos. Meanwhile, backyards offer a bit more privacy, with leafy trees and tall wooden fences separating each lawn. Most rowhomes list between $250,000 and $350,000, but some detached colonials in Liberty Square can cost up to $500,000.

The Fitzpatrick Rec Center has a new nature-inspired playground
Parkwood stays true to its name, offering an abundance of outdoor recreation at popular neighborhood parks. Next to the local elementary school, the Fitzpatrick Playground was recently transformed into a nature-inspired play lot, complete with a new water feature and mini suspension bridge. At the Fitzpatrick Rec Center, older kids can shoot hoops on basketball courts or practice dribbling down the soccer field. Further north, the Junod Recreation Center offers another new playground and several well-maintained athletic facilities. Next door, the Parkwood Youth Organization offers a variety of community sports programs, from pee-wee football to travel basketball. While kids practice for the next big game, parents can take a relaxing stroll down the Poquessing Creek Trail.

Parkwood is known as the holiday neighborhood
Philadelphia locals know Parkwood as ‘the holiday neighborhood.’ Whether it’s the Fourth of July, Halloween or Christmas, Parkwood homes are always decked out for the holidays. While there is no designated decorating committee, “many residential blocks coordinate themes and decorate their homes together,” says Bill Callahan, a resident and co-owner of TheNorthEastLife.com.

Philadelphia Mills Mall is a regional shopping destination
Parkwood residents can walk to the neighborhood shopping center to eat lunch at Reen’s Delicatessen or grab a quick snack at the Philly Pretzel Factory. Grocery trips are never an inconvenience with Sam’s Club and Walmart just across Knights Road. Between the two stores, Philadelphia Mills Mall is a regional shopping destination with over 200 brand-name outlet stores. Before heading home, shoppers can grab a bite to eat at one of the fast-food chains surrounding the parking lot.

Young students walk to Stephen Decatur School
Parkwood students can begin attending Philadelphia City schools in kindergarten. Crosswalks and flat sidewalks make it easy for kids to walk to class at the Stephen Decatur School. This combined elementary and middle school works with Vetri Community Partnership to teach students about nutrition through cooking classes. After eighth grade, teens can take the bus to George Washington High School. Both public schools score an overall C or higher on Niche.

SEPTA’s Trenton line brings locals straight to Center City
Woodhaven Road borders the west side of Parkwood, allowing residents to access the South Philadelphia Medical Center and nearby interstates quickly. On the opposite side of Woodhaven, the Northeast Philadelphia Airport is a smaller branch of the Philadelphia International Airport System. Gene Fish, a fellow Northeast Philly resident and local Realtor with RE/MAX Elite, explains, “That little airport has never been a problem for residents because it’s mostly used for storage and some private airfare.” The much busier Philadelphia International Airport is only 40 minutes away on I-95. While Center City is easily accessible from this busy interstate, most commuters take the SEPTA Trenton Line to work each morning.
