Sports-oriented neighborhood with a convenient location
A small city neighborhood with three sizable parks and a legacy tied to the Philadelphia Eagles, Wissinoming is a community of sports and outdoor recreation. Located by the Delaware River in the city's northeast section, the community drained its namesake creek in the 1930s as the city grew outward, transforming former farmland into a densely populated urban neighborhood arranged in a grid with blocks of varying sizes. “We’re conveniently located to Route 95 and US 1 so we’ve got easy access to Center City,” says David Teitelman, a local Realtor with Hampton Preferred Real Estate Inc. and 15 years of experience.

Visit the neighborhood's namesake park
The 42-acre Wissinoming Park anchors the neighborhood atop a creek bed and offers everything from shaded grassy areas to a seasonal splash pad. With the community so close to the Delaware River, anglers often come through on their way to Lardner's Point Park in the shadow of the Tacony Palmyra Bridge. Hikers and bikers enjoy the tree-covered paths at the riverfront park and often run along the K&T trail that parallels the river. Moss Playground is a quiet spot for kids to come take advantage of the multiple sports courts and play equipment.

Old brick and stone homes
Today, a mix of brick and stone masonry row houses and twin-style duplexes make up most of the neighborhood's homes. Some homes date as far back as the 1920s, with newer homes built in 2010. Homes typically fall between 1,000 and 3,000 square feet in size and rest on lots typically less than a few thousand square feet. On the pricier end, buyers can find a 1,650-square-foot, detached, single-family home with five bedrooms, four bathrooms and a fully finished basement three blocks from Wissinoming Park for $380,000. A row house with approximately 1,000 square feet of living space and a small front porch will go for around $160,000 to $200,000. There are roughly 5,000 homes total in the neighborhood and the average number of days on the market for Wissinoming is slightly higher than the national average. Support the local sports team
A few years before the community drained Wissinoming Creek, the predecessor to the Eagles -- the Frankford Yellow Jackets – played at a stadium close to Wissinoming Park, along Frankford Avenue between Benner and Devereaux Streets. The Yellow Jackets, part of the NFL's inaugural decade, eventually collapsed due to financial issues and a fire that heavily damaged the club's stadium. Decades later, row houses and a shopping center have replaced the old stadium grounds. But the neighborhood still rallies to cheer for the Moss Eagles, the community's youth football team that plays nearby at Moss Memorial Field. Community members also play and support local teams that call the American Legion Recreation Center home.

Old restaurants with rich flavor
One of the community's oldest businesses, Haegele's Bakery, opened in 1930. Currently in its fourth generation, the bakeshop specializes in traditional German desserts such as apfelkuchen and black forest cake. Daly’s Irish Pub is a simple eatery with an impressive selection of on-tap beers and weekly entertainment like Friday night karaoke. Joanie’s Deli is known for its homemade dishes. Locals can grab their groceries from small spots like Fano Food Market and Van Kirk Food Market.
