Pompton Lakes is a New Jersey borough surrounded by lakes and the Ramapo Mountains. Dutch settlers originally used the area as farmland before the discovery of iron ore resulted in major development of the area in the 1700s. Pompton Lakes voted to split from Pompton Township in 1895, and the borough was officially incorporated the same year. Today, the suburb offers local shopping and dining, community parks, nearby nature reserves to the north and plenty of ways to commute to New York City.

Sidewalks line the suburban residential streets in Pompton Lakes, while manicured lawns complement the classic homes. 20th-century Colonial-style and ranch-style homes feature medium-sized lots and driveways, as well as some coming with detached garages. Homes tend to stay on the market for about a month and typically sell for $400,000 to $600,000. There are also some townhouses and multifamily dwellings, some with mountain views and attached garages, ranging from $300,000 to $500,000.

Good grades for Pompton Lakes School District
Younger students may start at Lincoln Elementary, which receives a B grade from Niche, before moving on to Lakeside Middle with a B-plus. Older students may then attend Pompton Lakes High, which earns an A-minus grade and is ranked by Niche as one of the top high schools for athletes and teachers in the state. “The schools here are great, which is why my daughter decided to stay in Pompton Lakes and send her son to them,” says Michele Belfiore, a Realtor at Keller Williams Prosperity Realty with 45 years of experience both selling and living in Pompton Lakes.

Hershfield Park, Pompton Lake
Hershfield Park along the Wanaque River offers a dog park, playground and athletic facilities. To the east on Pompton Lake is Lakeside Park with a soccer field, kayak launch and a fishing pier. Pacifico-Galo Park has a playground right next to South Twin Lake. “We also have great recreation sports leagues,” adds Belfiore. “High schoolers will help coach the little league teams or host summer camps for the kids. And for the older community, we have the Pompton Lakes Golden Agers." Three miles north, residents can access 16 miles of trails in the mountains via the Ramapo Lake Trailhead.

Local Restaurants along Wanaque Avenue
Pompton Lakes Town Square is where to go for groceries and essentials with chains like Lidl and local shops like Home Towne Pet Shoppe. Popular local restaurants are spread along Wanaque Avenue. Mack’s American Bar & Grill has familiar and new local dishes, Taqueria La Juquilita offers Mexican favorites and Tony’s Pizza has been serving pies since 1963.
Newark and NYC Commute
Locals are 15 miles south of the New York border via Interstate 287 and 30 miles northwest of New York City via U.S. Route 202. “There are a fair amount of commuters that drive into the city or use mass transit, like the express bus, to get to work,” says Belfiore. Residents can also drive 4 miles south to the Lincoln Park train station, which runs rail lines to Hoboken and New York-Penn Station.
