Also known as Munjoy Hill, the name is taken from George Munjoy, who arrived in 1659 from the Massachusetts Bay Colony to settle the land on the eastern point of the peninsula. “East End is a bustling neighborhood right along the Eastern Promenade, which is a waterfront park,” says Emily Levecque, a broker with Portside Real Estate Group. “It’s so walkable; there are trails to downtown, and there are markets, cafes and restaurants all around.” Considered quaint but trendy, East End is perfect for buyers who want to be right in the middle of all the action of downtown Portland without sacrificing the friendly, residential feel of a true neighborhood.

Hundred-year-old homes line the city streets
Homes in East End are a hodgepodge of New England architecture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with recently built condo complexes scattered in between. “You’ll see turn-of-the-century houses right next to brand-new, modern buildings,” Levecque says. “It’s a real mix of rentals and owner-occupied homes.” Brick sidewalks and old trees towering above steep, hilly streets give this neighborhood a more residential feel despite the crowded city blocks where homes sit side-by-side. While one-bedroom condos can start in the $400,000s, buyers can expect to pay more than $1 million for a detached single-family home or semi-attached townhouse with three bedrooms. Houses in historic styles like Colonial Revivals with black shutters, Italianates with bay windows or fully remodeled Victorians can come with a premium price tag as high as $4 million.

Bay views from the Eastern Promenade
The 2-mile-long Eastern Promenade borders the neighborhood along Casco Bay. This sweeping waterfront plaza is the crown jewel of Portland’s park system, with stretches of paved, tree-lined trails along the water that connect to walkways spanning the entire peninsula. On balmy summer afternoons, residents picnic on the hill overlooking the shore while sailboats launch out into the calm waters. Kayaks and paddleboard rentals are also available at East End Beach at the end of the Promenade. On the Fourth of July, people from all over Portland flock to the Promenade to kick back on the grass and watch as fireworks light up the night sky above the bay. But even during winter, the park is still full of life, with sloping hills that make it a favorite among neighborhood kids for sledding. A few blocks away is the Portland Observatory, the country's sole remaining historic maritime signal station. Fort Sumner Park, also known as Standpipe Park, is the site of a former 1790s coastal defense fortification. Although the fort is gone, this hilltop park offers sweeping views of the city skyline.

Worldwide flavors converge along Washington Avenue
Residents of East End are within walking distance of restaurants along Washington Avenue, home to some of the city’s most vibrant and diverse dining. Cong Tu Bot is a quirky spot with open-air dining thanks to its large garage doors, heralded as one of the best places to get a hearty bowl of pho in Portland. Just a couple doors down is Oxbow Blending and Bottling, whose beer garden-style outdoor patio is a great place to sit and sip on a craft brew. Patrons can even grab a snack at the Duckfat Frites Shack walk-up counter, a quick-service outpost for the award-winning Duckfat restaurant with a smaller menu focusing on savory poutine and creamy milkshakes. Those who prefer to stay in and cook will find Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s grocery stores just outside the neighborhood. Smaller convenience stores stocked with gourmet goods are scattered throughout East End.

Residents regularly get together with neighbors
The Munjoy Hill Neighborhood Association hosts regular get-togethers for hobbyist residents to share their passions, from needle crafts to chess to songwriting. It also hosts a handful of annual events where locals can meet their neighbors, including a perennial sale with native flowers and an art show at East End Community School.
Families can select which high school their kids will attend
Kids can attend Portland Public Schools, with East End Community School located right in the neighborhood, a short walk for some students. The elementary school, which scores a C-plus from Niche, has its own community garden and sends learners on to King Middle, which earns a C grade. Portland Public Schools is a high school choice district, with the closest school to East End being Portland High. The high school receives a B-minus rating and has career pathways including automotive technology, education and health sciences.

Just a mile from downtown and surrounded by a network of trails, East End is convenient for travel with or without a car. “Getting off-street parking in East End is like winning the lottery,” Levecque jokes. “But it is a truly walkable lifestyle there. You could get rid of your car altogether.” Those who choose to drive will appreciate being right along Interstate 295, with the Portland International Jetport 15 minutes away.
