Suburban vibes in southeast Portland
Brentwood-Darlington is custom-made for folks looking for quiet residential living with easy access to all the amenities they want. While technically part of Portland, the heavily residential Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood has more of a suburban feel. "It's within the city, but it kind of has an unincorporated feel," says Scott Wilson, a Realtor with RE/MAX Equity Group, who's worked here and throughout Portland since 1996. "It developed in phases over time, meaning it doesn't all feel the same everywhere." Situated at the city's southeastern border with Happy Valley, the neighborhood is just north of the retail corridor that runs through Portland's southern suburbs. While other parts of Portland can be more costly, homebuyers can make their dollars go further here. "Affordability is part of the area's appeal compared to closer in Portland. It's newer than a lot of the core of the city," Wilson says.
Brentwood-Darlington has mixed housing stock
Brentwood-Darlington is a quiet place with well-maintained greenspaces featuring a range of homes, from modern traditional houses to midcentury bungalows to early-20th century foursquares. "It's a mixed stock of some modern homes with a few farmhouses sprinkled in. You'll probably be dealing with a lot of two- and three-bedrooms, that sort of moderate house. We're probably looking in the 1,200 to 1,900 square foot range," Wilson says. The median price for a single-family home in Brentwood-Darlington is around $425,000. Depending upon a home's size and condition, most homes sell in the $350,000 to $550,000. Larger homes with renovations or newly built homes can cost between $600,000 and $850,000.

Local shops and restaurants
There are also a few local shops, like Starlight Knitting Society, where knitters and fiber artists can grab supplies and participate in craft workshops. Grocery Outlet, a discount supermarket, and a handful of convenience stores are scattered throughout the area. However, for major shopping outings, most locals head down State Route 213 to Happy Valley for big-box department stores along with various supermarkets. "If you want more of a neighborhood feel for your shopping and eating experience than the box store, Foster-Powell and Woodstock neighborhoods about a mile and a mile-and-a-half away provide various options," Wilson says. Where the neighborhood really stands out is its restaurant options, which include some of the best food trucks in the city, such as Birrieria Jalisco, which serves everything from traditional tacos and tortas to fusion dishes like Birria Ramen, and standout Hawaiian joint Iolani's Plate Lunch. There are also a few popular sit-down spots, like cozy Mehri's Cafe and Bakery and low-key Vietnamese eatery Bun Bo Hue Restaurant.

Portland Public Schools
The neighborhood is part of the Portland Public Schools district. Kids in grades K-8 may attend Skyline School, graded B-plus by Niche, before moving on to the A-graded Lincoln High School.
Brentwood and Errol Parks for play and wildlife
Brentwood-Darlington has several neighborhood parks to accommodate a variety of activities. Errol Park has lots to keep children of all ages occupied, including a playground, splash pad, skatepark, basketball court and a nice short trail that cuts through the park. It's also a great place to spot all sorts of wildlife, like beavers, ducks and owls. Meanwhile, 14-acre Brentwood Park has a baseball field, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts and a slide. It also occasionally features live music and other public events.

Oaks Amusement Park close by
Although Brentwood-Darlington isn't particularly an event destination for the Portland area, it is relatively close to downtown and all the happenings there. Even better, it's about 5 miles from Oaks Amusement Park, a small amusement park that opened its doors in the spring of 1905, making it one of the nation's oldest continually operating amusement parks.
Quick access to I-205 and the MAX Green Line
Generally, traffic is moderate in the Brentwood-Darlington area. Southeast Duke Street and Southeast 45th Avenue experience congestion as major roads, especially during peak commuting hours. However, traffic here is less intense than in other, more centralized portions of Portland. Both Interstate 205 and a light rail stop on the MAX Green Line are roughly 2 miles away. "Getting to downtown Portland can be a bit more challenging — it's a 20-minute drive," Wilson says. "But regular buses run through Brentwood-Darlington, and there's a light rail stop by I-205."

I like the ability to commute on the bus easily from my neighborhood. I would recommend this neighborhood to others as it is a lot of families good schools, an IB school not too far away. The neighbors are friendly and there's not too much noise at night.
