Buckman is a bustling slice of Portland
Buckman is a Portland enclave with a deep history and an acclaimed present-day reputation. This was the first neighborhood established on the Eastside of Portland and, today, it's perhaps one of the most lively neighborhoods across the city. There are attractions galore here, and that’s what draws home buyers to the area. “I think it’s definitely that we have a lot going on,” says Molly Radany, owner and founder of Experiment PDX, describing Buckman’s appeal. “And it’s also very inner southeast Portland, so it’s easy to get to other places in the city, like if you just wanted to hop downtown. I’ve lived here for 10 years. It’s easy to get around. The public transit is really, really great.”
A spot for any taste
Restaurants, bars and breweries pepper Buckman heavily. Wing lovers may be drawn to a restaurant that proclaims to have the best wings in all of Portland: Fire on the Mountain. At Fire on the Mountain, in addition to traditional Buffalo, visitors can douse their wings in sauces like Bourbon Chipotle and Raspberry Habanero.
Grand Fir Brewing is a popular spot to grab a drink, with roughly a dozen beers on tap and a menu of about a dozen more cocktails. “Awesome atmosphere, everyone is super nice,” Radany says. “That’s definitely a hallmark of this community.”
Radany’s own space, Experiment PDX, is right next door, a museum and event venue that caters to all ages and has a jam-packed calendar. “My vision for it is for it to be a space for people to come and share and learn and be creative,” Radany says. “A space for Portland nerds.” The museum here features hands-on exhibits with Lego robotics, electrical circuits and more. Kids can go to Experiment PDX’s summer camps and afterschool classes, and adults can grab a drink at the bar. “I’ve done things like science cocktail nights and nerd standup poetry slams,” Radany says.
Locals can also stop by Imago Theater to catch one of the rotating plays on the docket. Or they can go to Bossanova Ballroom for a concert — the facility is the oldest continuously operating music and dance hall in Portland, dating back to 1907.

Home options suit a variety of tastes
A variety of single-family and multi-family homes, and apartments, are woven around Buckman’s plethora of attractions. Some of Buckman’s historic homes date back to the late 1800s and, on the opposite side of the spectrum, there are some newly built townhomes in the neighborhood as well. The traditional houses in Buckman take mostly Craftsman or Victorian styling. Many have multiple stories, and the entirety of the neighborhood is organized in grid fashion. Typical sale prices in Buckman can range from the $700,000s to the $900,000s. “It is a good mix,” Radany says. “Craftsman houses and old Victorians. Some get painted really cool, bright, crazy colors, which is a lot of fun.”
