Active residential neighborhood of Portland
Although it’s mostly a residential neighborhood, South Tabor lies just below an extinct volcano that has been turned into a recreational haven and become one of the draws for the many who have decided to live in this part of Portland. “You’re right near Mt. Tabor, which is just a gorgeous walking area,” says Alex Roy, a Realtor with John L. Scott Real Estate. Roy lives in Mt. Tabor to the north, which is home to the park — and extinct volcano — that shares the neighborhood’s namesake. Cyclists often bike down streets like Woodward on any given day in South Tabor. Others, including some with strollers, can also be seen on casual walks along the sidewalk. “There’s just a really friendly feel in the neighborhood,” says Olivia Rush, a broker with Living Room Realty, who’s done several sales in South Tabor. “It’s really close to Division Street, which has tons of shops, coffee shops, restaurants and food cart ponds. And it’s also right off U.S. 26, so it’s pretty central and easy to get to other places in the city from South Tabor.” The neighborhood has also been viewed as more affordable when compared with other parts of Portland closer to the city center, attracting many first-time buyers over the past several years. “They’re finding that ‘I can be closer in, but I can find a smaller home that’s more affordable,” Roy says.
Close to popular Mt. Tabor park
The main green space within South Tabor is Clinton City Park on the western end. Visitors to the 12-acre park can run up its small hill or go sledding on it following winter snowfalls. The park also provides expansive green space that allows parents and spectators to set up quad folding chairs as they watch youth soccer games and practices. However, the most prominent outdoors destination around here is Mt. Tabor Park, located in the neighborhood of the same name that borders South Tabor to the north. The roughly 190-acre park, located on an extinct volcano, features open reservoirs, hiking trails and several other amenities like a basketball court, playground and tennis courts. Bikers and hikers can get scenic overlooking views of the reservoirs and downtown Portland skyline while they take to the network of trails that wind below the canopies of towering pines. The backside of Mt. Tabor facing east offers a distant view of snow-capped Mt. Hood, Oregon’s tallest peak and one of its most iconic landmarks.
Clinton City Park within South Tabor itself is a frequent go-to for some laidback fun.

Finding groceries and bubble tea at Powell Street Station
While a few spots are sprinkled in different parts of the neighborhood, the main shopping and dining area is concentrated in South Tabor’s southeast pocket around the intersection of Southeast Powell Boulevard and Southeast 82nd Avenue. Here, residents can go the Powell Street Station shopping center to find groceries at WinCo Foods and pick up a tasty bubble tea at Yin’s Tea next door. Located just east of this area is the Fubonn Shopping Center, a massive indoor mall that includes stores specializing in Asian groceries and products. Though they are not necessarily located within South Tabor, residents are close to some of the food cart pods seen across the city. Among them is the Hinterland Bar and Food Carts located along Southeast 50th Avenue, just northwest of the neighborhood. From the many outdoor vendors there, locals can an enjoy diverse options that include barbecue tacos using lard-infused flour tortillas, juicy and bacon-topped fried chicken sandwiches, margaritas, and cups of sundaes topped with pretzels.

Ranch-styles, Craftsmen, bungalows
Like many other neighborhoods in the city, South Tabor features many sections lined with mature trees. The Craftsmen and bungalows commonly seen in Portland’s other residential neighborhoods exist, but are also joined by traditional ranch-style houses and some of their stylistic variations. One other drawing point has been the character of some of the older properties here, some of which can be quite colorful. “Another reason I love South Tabor is some of the lots are slightly bigger than other nearby areas,” Rush says. “There are also some beautiful mid-century, ranch-style homes. There’s people who love that mid-century vibe. Even if you don’t live in one, it’s fun to walk by. There’s a lot of pride of ownership in the neighborhood.” Price points for many of these homes run between $500,000 and $600,000, with a larger two-story builds exceeding that range. There are also some smaller two-bedroom Craftsmen and bungalows that can run between the upper $300,000s and upper $400,000s.

Great Neighborhood. Schools including Franklin high school are decently funded, have great staff, and are within walking distance. Very biker friendly. Great restaurants near by. Struggles with homeless population near Powell street, but they are respectful for the most part. Roads and sidewalks are well maintained on the more major roads. Overall good neighborhood growing up in.
