Harlem Properties is proud to introduce 148 West 119th Street, a stunning fully restored townhouse on one of Harlems most desirable blocks. Located in the Mount Morris Park Historic District, this home is an integral part of the heart of Harlem.
Originally constructed in 1900, this four story Italianate brownstone was part of one of the first developments in the neighborhood. The home was used as a single family residence for much of its history throughout the 1900s. In 2012, the current owner worked closely with their architect to add modern amenities such as heated floors, central air conditioning, and an enormous sixteen foot (16) extension to the ground and parlor floors creating a double-height space, a 26 wall of south-facing windows, and a secluded enormous terrace off of the master bedroom. This breath-taking expansion is unlike anything we have ever seen before, but its not the only feature that makes this home truly special.
Starting on the parlor level, you enter the home through a double-door vestibule with restored original doors and tiling and into the formal salon. Here we encounter the first of six original fireplaces with intricate hand-carved wood floral embellishments and a marble face. There are two large double pane cystal windows in the salon which face the north to the quiet street and are encased in restored original window moldings and have the original pocket shutters. The floors throughout the home are made of select red oak strips which have been cut to a 2 width and much of the wood panel moldings are made of mahogany.
Moving towards the living room we pass through the center parlor, which has been retrofitted with two sets of sliding original pocket doors and contains a fabulous bar in between with a small sink embedded in a Carrara white marble counter top, and a wine refrigerators with separate ice maker by Marvel, all framed by a mirror tiled back splash. Opposite the bar is a powder room decorated in floor-to-ceiling amber Onyx tiles which is has been built-in underneath the staircase.
The rear parlor and main living room are truly breathtaking. Another original fireplace on the west wall is fully functional as a wood-burning fireplace and has a large mirror above that doubles as a secret flat-screen television.
The parlor floor ends with a unique hand-carved wood railing and an opening that extends another 16' to the back wall. Facing directly south is an enormous wall-of-windows under a structural archway and on the lower level, French doors by Anderson Windows which lead to a secluded garden complete with wood grain porcelain tile flooring, a fountain on the back wall, three foot (3) deep planters, and a privacy fence on three sides. This is a true escape from the busy streets of Manhattan.
Also on the ground floor is an enormous chefs kitchen with a floor fully tiled in white Carrara marble. Underneath, a radiant floor heating system.
The following appliances come included with the kitchen: Double refrigerator and freezer, full-size wine cooler, double ovens, large vented cooking range, dishwasher, and warmer drawer all of which come by Viking. Raindrop fixtures by Restoration Hardware hang over the oversized marble island with an extra-deep soaking stainless steel sink.
The master bedroom is located on the second level and features an original hand-carved marble fire place with plumbing for a gas burner and a fire-rated flue if you wanted to activate the fireplace. In fact, all of the fireplaces in the home come with plumbing for gas functionally and flues already installed should you want all of them to be working.
A superlative of this home is the large south-facing terrace off of the master bedroom which is a total of twenty six feet (26) off of the ground level and offers fantastic views of the manicured gardens between West 118th and 119th Streets. The terrace is tiled with wood grain porcelain tile and has an intricate cast iron fence so you can have a clear view of your own private garden and neighboring tree-tops.
All of the bedrooms in this home have their own en-suite full bathrooms which are all tiled using the finest Carrara marble and have heated floors. Each bathroom is a slight variation of one another, and one of the bathrooms comes with a custom inlaid skull & cross bone tiling, ideal for a member of the household who has a light sense of humor and doesnt mind a departure from the classical style of the rest of the home.
The entire house, including the studio apartment on the ground floor will be delivered vacant. There are a few small details left to be completed that are perfect for a buyer who wants to customize some more of the interior design themselves. Overall, this is one of the best Harlem brownstones we have ever encountered and we are sure you will love to make this your new home. NOTE: No open houses.
