"The house is always its site." So thought the earliest Modernist architect in Lincoln, Henry B. Hoover, who in 1934, climbed a hill overlooking the Cambridge Reservoir and bought two acres on which to build a house for his family, now offered for the first time. In 1935, he sketched out the house that would be built in 1937, predating Lincoln's more famous Walter Gropius House by more than a year. Hoover picked the better site. A master dramatist, his design steers the visitor up the private country drive off of Trapelo, to the north side of the house, up some steps, to a welcoming foyer, a few more steps inside, and the breathtaking view unfolds as you're taken into the living room. Neither words nor pictures can replicate the experience that unfolds as you enter. The vista draws you in and almost back out, onto the south side, through the wall of windows to the terrace and rocky terrain beyond, as it slopes back down in the direction of the water.
