A stone’s throw from Gitchi Gummi, it’s a nice place to hang in the front yard on a couple of Adirondacks watching the comings and goings in the harbor. Or, bundle up on a stormy day and study how the mighty mitt of the big lake cuffs the lighthouse. There’s a vibe inside of Sigurd Olson books, friendly meals around the table, and a noon nap before heading down to ol’ Leng’s Fountain for a malt. Peaceful, wooded corner lot, a spirit of reflection and ease permeates the property. There’s stories here. Ingeborg Holte, early Grand Marais artist and Isle Royale denizen once lived here. Towering trees were planted for our benefit by earlier stewards. Inside are a couple cozy bedrooms. The living room is light filled and spacious. Large kitchen feels like Grandma’s. The dining area has had so many good visits it draws you in long after the meal is over. Off the back is a private little four-season porch for sketching, journaling, meditating, or heck just have a snooze. Along the years, the garage was transformed into a studio space with windows, bed and paneling placed just so to inspire the mind. Don’t worry, part of the garage is still an area for tools, bikes, etc. There is a sprawling basement, part of which is finished off with vintage linoleum tiles. Stick the rec area down there: TV, pool table, game of darts, or make it a crafts area. Lots of recent improvements: metal roof to outlast us all, new boiler, wiring upgrades, new water heater, flooring upgrades, paint… You can still put your own touches if you like, but geez, it’s pretty perfect! Seller would prefer to sell furnished and boy there is some cute stuff! Also wired-in is a tidy little vacation rental following: keep that up and bring in some dough when you’re not around. Once you land here, no reason to get back in the car: you could stumble home from Voyageur Brewing, stroll over to the Angry Trout, hike over to Sweetheart’s Bluff. Or, head off on bigger adventures like Ingeborg: find a wild mountain and sketch the fireweed, fish the Brule and bring home a steelhead! Pure, lifeblood flowing in the heart of Grand Marais.
