HISTORY:
Built in 1823, 27 Vandam Street is one of a few rare properties located in the coveted Charlton-King-Vandam Historic District. The area encompassing the district was originally an estate, home to the renowned "Richmond Hill" mansion. The estate notably served as George Washington's headquarters during the American Revolution, as well as home to John Adams during his Vice Presidency, Aaron Burr, and John Jacob Astor.
In the mid-1820s, John Jacob Astor sold the lots on Vandam Street to local builders. Today, the row of four houses which were built on the North side of Vandam Street are in rare harmony, and remain virtually unbroken, 27 Vandam Street being one of them.
Famed choreographer Paul Taylor was one of the home's more recent owners, he divided the property into four separate units. The townhouse was restored to its single-family glory and intelligently redesigned by its current owners, who commissioned Erica Goetz of Matthew Baird Architects, to transform the home into an extraordinary architectural tribute to both the past and the present.
