Crafted by architect Hugh Jefferson Randolph, 3900 Petes Path was designed to reflect the homeowner’s Texas and New Orleans heritage and accommodate a nine-and-one-half foot tall antique four poster bed and a Steinway grand piano. The home was crafted with heart pine floors found in an old structure in upstate New York. The beautifully aged brick - legend has, from a former governor’s mansion– was used for two fireplaces: one in the living room and another in the primary bedroom. The home has 10 foot ceilings in the main living areas that give the home an expansive feeling among the many built-ins found throughout the home. For the owner, the most special and wonderful space was the kitchen. Taking a historical cue from old Texas farmhouses (where the cooking was done in a separate space, apart from the living area) the kitchen has a distinct architecture to set it apart both aesthetically and functionally. Being only one story (with no second story above) allows for high arched ceiling with wooden beams. A metal roof – unique to that part of the house– makes for wonderful rainy days drinking coffee at the built-in banquette seating with a wood table crafted from a beautiful piece of Texas pecan. The space of the living room and into the kitchen create a wonderful flow for parties but also wonderful conversation areas. French doors in the kitchen, living room, and dining room open onto an interior deck. The house has seen many a great party thanks to the courtyard and the special use of space dedicated to the Steinway, which was an inspired design choice, as it made the space very well-suited for house concerts, allowing the homeowner to open up her home for jazz concerts, (the most memorable ones being jazz trios led by legendary jazz pianist Rich Harney before his untimely passing) and jazz guitar concerts from French musicians traveling through Austin on U.S. tours. This is a truly special home located in a very special community.
