Michigan Home For Sale! This charming home is located in the unincorporated Village of Chassell in Houghton County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula - located on Pike Bay at the south end of Portage Lake. In 1855, the land that included what was to become Chassell was acquired from the state of Michigan by the St. Mary's Canal and Land Company. The first building in the area, a log cabin, was built close to the mouth of the Sturgeon River in 1863. In 1867, New Yorker John Chassell, a French farmer, purchased farmland from the St. Mary's Canal and Land Company where the community is now located. This was a lumbering, farming and fishing community with potatoes and strawberries as the main crops. The Sturgeon River Boom Company in 1875, dug a canal to bring logs from the Sturgeon to Pike Bay. During the same time the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway had extended a line to the area with a stop at Chassell and in February 1888 Chassell's first post office was established. Today this town is know for unique retail shops, restaurants and service establishments. The soils and climate around Chassell are especially well suited for strawberries, and most of the approximately 650 acres planted in Houghton County are located in this area. The Copper Country Strawberry Festival, which is sponsored by the Chassell Lions Club, is held each year at Chassell's Centennial Park, the weekend after the 4th of July. The Park is located on the south end of Portage Lake and features 900' of shoreline, a boat launch and dock, fishing pier, swimming beach, picnic area and shelter, wetlands walkway, and a children's playground. Chassell is well-known for being located at the headwaters of the Sturgeon River. Fishing is spectacular. In the summer you can enjoy mountain biking, hiking, boating, canoeing, kayaking, hunting, bird watching, nature photography and the beautiful clear blue water of the bay. If you like to sea-kayak, Chassell is a Keweenaw Water Trail rest-stop! The Chassell Trail, (#15) takes you to Painesdale and the famed Bill Nichols Multi-Use Trail from Mass City to Houghton. This trail can be accessed using back roads. The Chassell-Houghton snowmobile trail runs along the old railroad grade. An 8K groomed Cross country ski trail, starts in Chassell. The trailhead is just west of the Heritage Center. An old-fashioned Christmas celebration is held in Chassell the second weekend in December. Immediately North and East of town along Pike Bay is a concentration of year-round and seasonal homes and cottages, some of which are rented to tourists in the summer.
