Coltrane was described as a top distinguished builder in the region at the time, along with George Langbert. This Federalist style 2 story brick mansion, with Greek Revival interior concepts, is known for it's showpiece, the 3 story solid cherry staircase. Most of the timber used to build the house was cut from nearby Point Lookout Mountain. 14 foot ceilings downstairs and all rooms are large enough for plenty of furniture and dining sets and entertaining. The description of the house from an unnamed author describes it best, "This two story, three bay, single pile house with center passage is one of the county's finest dwellings. Detailed with an elaborate entablature, prominent lintels over doors and windows, exterior end chimneys, and central entrance with sidelights and transom.
