It is a short walk from the ferry landing on island to the Cracked Mug. Monhegan has been an artist's island for generations - perfect for open air painting or finding a quiet place to create. The small, rustic village has several inns, a few stores and eat-in or take out food options. Most of the island is in a land trust with miles of hiking trails to explore. The cliffs on the backside of the island are spectacular, and are among the highest ocean cliffs in the country. And there's a little brewery that is a perfect, sociable pitstop after hiking. The island is very quiet in the fall, winter and spring. It is much loved by birders, artists and those who enjoy Maine in all seasons.
