About This Home

As of March 2019

Built in 1895, this lovingly maintained Queen Anne Victorian home's historic character and beautiful features have been carefully restored or preserved by the current owners over the past 47 years as they adapted it to accommodate modern living. It now comprises .44 acres. Stepping inside the front door, visitors enter a large oak-floored foyer. Beautifully and lavishly trimmed in oak woodwork, it is the most elaborately decorated area in the home. Stripped and refinished by the current owners, the original woodwork and oak floors now gleam. To the right is the round open space provided by the turret which contains three curved glass windows with a small, curved seating bench built underneath. An open staircase featuring turned oak spindles, square posts and curved banister winds up the right side of the foyer to the second story. To the left of the foyer is a large living room with oak floors. The current owners hired local artisan, Tom Sorg, to build tri-fold doors that compliment and blend with the woodwork in the foyer. At the far end of the living room is a small, somewhat ornate, brick fireplace built into a corner. The kitchen was totally gutted & expanded by the current owners & Tom Sorg also carefully designed & built oak kitchen cupboards, cabinets, doors & woodwork to match the trim in the woodwork throughout the home. Sorg also built the new shelving in the library. An original marble sinktop remains in the main floor bathroom. The second story of the home remains almost the same as it was when built for the original owners (only changes are two full baths that have been added with the master bedroom having it's own private bath). There is a 44 foot long second story hallway. The second floor also features the second story of the turret, curved hall walls and one back staircase that goes downstairs, and another back staircase that leads up to the walk up attic and a large dormer enclosed porch all the way across the back roof. The original wainscoting is still on the third story porch dormer, but new windows now replace the original ones around the three outside walls. The current owners also updated the electrical, plumbing, and heating throughout the home. The large, two story garage is sitting behind the house and is full of character and charm and was originally used to shelter horse carriages. Mr. John W. Squires, original owner, also did woodworking in a small room at the rear as a shop. There are also large rooms on both stories at the front of the building. In 1895 when the property was built, Mr. Squires also owned the hardware store in Mt. Carroll at the location of Mt. Carroll's current pharmacy located on the corner of Market and Main in the downtown district. Mr Squires had the contract for plumbing and heating at the time for the erection of the Caroline Mark Home in Mt. Carroll. One day while personally supervising the work, he fell from the second story of the Caroline Mark construction site landing upon a cement floor and sustained injuries from which he never fully recovered. He traveled to Europe in the summer, and also owned a beautiful home in Lake Geneva, WI. The property sale includes paintings by the original owner's wife, Mrs. J.W. Squires, photos of the original owner, plus an original 1896 oil painting of the Mr. Squire's dog, Barker. There is also a watercolor painting of the home, plus a sketch of the home by Illinois architectural artist, David Alan Badger, that will transfer with the sale of the property. Owning this historic home is a once in a lifetime opportunity! NEW GAS HOT WATER FURNACE 2008, NEW WATER HEATER 2009, EXTERIOR REPAINTED 2017, NEW CEDAR SHAKES ON WEST AND SOUTH SIDES OF HOME & GARAGE, FRESHLY PAINTED ROOMS UPSTAIRS, 200 AMP ELECTRIC,.
