This private spot is located in historic Halawa, 3 miles past Kapaau town, 5 miles past Hawi. Turn towards the ocean, then pass through a tunnel of arching trees until you reach Kapana'ia Road. The Hawaiian chief who was to become Kamehameha the Great spent years of his youth in this area, cultivated taro and vegetables in the gulches, swam and surfed in nearby Kapanaia Bay. Kapanaia Road provides shoreline public access to walk along the coast for miles in both directions. Just above the parcel lies a small Catholic cemetery, once serving the church where Father (soon-to-be-Saint) Damien was parish priest before being called to Molokai.
