I can print off a picture from my computer, frame it and hang it on the wall. It will cover up wall space and function. The feeling it evokes, the majesty and appreciation for the artist however is nowhere to be found. This house was logged and built by Johnson and Basey. No house like it exists in the world. I have felt it as a breathing living entity, and the calm it brings me has sustained me through 23 years of a challenging career in frontier medicine. The staircase is built from old growth logs that had sunk to the bottom of the mill pond, salvaged decades before when it was drained, dried and milled by the builders. I know that all of this will not mean anything to some, but then they really shouldn't buy the house. This house is a love, a relationship, an appreciation for more than a roof over your head. If that sounds weird, I get it. I have owned and sold several homes in the past, never have I felt this way. I will also tell you that my neighbors have made this experience so wonderful. Years ago when a waterline broke feeding the house and I was out of town, it was my neighbors who dug it out by hand and had it repaired before I could get home. The families that live up here have truly been some of the best people I have met in Harney County.
