The first owner, Joel Campbell DuBose was the builder, who was an educator and writer, recruited to Birmingham to teach the children of the Roebuck Springs elite. He was the author of at least three books: "Sketches of Alabama" in 1901, "Notable Men of Alabama" in 1904, and "Alabama History" published in 1915. Mr. DuBose served in the Alabama Legislature from 1903-1907.
