Bustling Queens neighborhood boasting arts, charm and accessibility
Astoria, the large Queens neighborhood near the East River, is known for its many restaurants, vibrant arts scene, and quiet, residential streets. Local cafes, fruit stands and bakeries give the area accessible charm, just a short train ride from Manhattan. “The attraction of Astoria is that it has a cool neighborhood vibe with a mix of original neighborhood spots and new local businesses that are opening and creating a wonderful vibrancy,” says Patrick Smith, an Astoria resident and licensed associate real estate broker with Corcoran. “You still have proximity to the city, but you get much more of a neighborhood.”

A mix of co-op and condo buildings, plus townhouses
Co-ops and condos are found in postwar mid-rises, prewar tenement buildings and Greek revival rowhouses. “We have a high concentration of co-ops in Astoria,” says Smith, “Co-ops came into existence mainly in the 1980s when existing rental buildings, many of them rent-stabilized, were converted into co-ops.” Renovated one-bedroom co-ops in postwar buildings can be found for under $390,000. A two-bedroom condo in central Astoria might run $660,000 to $800,000. A brick multi-family house or townhouse costs between $1 and $2 million. Some larger residential towers are rising on the neighborhood’s west side, though mostly devoted to rentals. Newer lower-rise condo buildings like the seven-story Marina Astoria offer two-bedroom condos for $1.1 to $1.9 million.

Diversity reflected through eateries packed on 30th Avenue
A longstanding melting pot of cultures, Astoria is known for its bountiful and diverse food scene. A broad range of eateries cluster along 30th Avenue, with more on Broadway. Standouts include Greek restaurants like Bahari and Aliada. Moroccan, Palestinian and Thai food is served along Steinway Street. Salerno Pizza offers pizzas and calzones, as well as Mexican food. Egyptian-owned restaurants, including Kabab Café, have contributed to the surrounding area nicknamed “Little Egypt.” The family-owned Gian Piero bakery offers fresh-baked cookies, cakes and breads. Nearby supermarkets and grocery stores include Food Emporium on Broadway, while CTown is on Newtown Avenue near 23rd Street.

Recreational green spaces and the city’s largest public pool
A few parks and playgrounds scattered throughout the neighborhood offer green space and recreation. Rainey Park overlooks Roosevelt Island and includes baseball fields, and the nearby Socrates Sculpture Park regularly showcases new art installations. The 60-acre Astoria Park offers a popular running track, tennis courts, soccer fields and a skate park. It’s also home to the Olympic-sized Astoria Pool, which is the largest public pool in New York City. Facing the East River, the park offers panoramic views of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge and the Hell Gate Bridge.

Bustling arts and film scenes and a packed events calendar
With its proximity to Manhattan and diverse community, Astoria has become a hub for arts, film and television. The stadium-sized theater at Kaufman Astoria Studios shows new releases and matinees. Two blocks over, the Museum of the Moving Image is a popular attraction for its film and digital arts exhibits, interactive displays and film screenings. A slew of community events further celebrates the neighborhood’s mark on arts and film. The Annual Arts Festival takes place In Socrates Sculpture Park every June, featuring family-friendly art projects, workshops, live music entertainment and performances, exhibitions and more. Every Monday evening at sundown through July and August, a patchwork of blankets covers Astoria Park’s lawn as folks set up for the Astoria LDC Summer Movie Series. Seasonal holiday events include a Fourth of July celebration, where Pre-Independence Day fireworks bring hundreds of community members to Astoria Park to enjoy the festivities.
One of Astoria's treasured gems is the Museum of the Moving Image, filled with wonders in film.

The N and W trains, plus a ferry stop
Limited subway lines make transportation a challenge, as only the N and W trains offer service along 31st Street. Many buses are available, and a ferry stop provides a connection to Lower Manhattan via the Wall Street/Pier 11 route. Interstate 278 and Route 25A provide connections for drivers.
