Eight miles from Asheboro, Randleman, North Carolina is not only the birthplace of NASCAR legend Richard Petty, it's where he still lives today. "He's our claim to fame," says Anna Liles, a resident of the area for over 20 years. She says the community hosts a yearly festival where residents can meet members of the Petty family, gawk at shiny race cars in the Petty Museum and enjoy treats from local food vendors. But driving on the windy, two-way roads throughout town where storefronts post the colors of the local football team, it's easy to see that there's more to Randleman than just racing. "It's a very tight-knit community where everybody knows everybody, and it's more affordable than a lot of other cities nearby," says Liles.

Older bungalows at a competitive price

Mid-century bungalows with raised foundations, vinyl siding and small front porches are often viewed as investment opportunities and typically average around $140,000; these homes sit close together on narrow, paved streets that connect to state roads. Towering sweetgum trees grow between Mid-century ranch-style homes that average about $245,000 and sit on one to two acres of land. One to two-story New Traditional homes from the early 2000s typically range between $250,000 and $370,000 with spacious wooden decks that lead out to hilly, wooded backyards and sometimes have above-ground pools.

Randleman High games are a big deal for locals

Local kids can begin at Randleman Elementary, which scores a B from Niche and continue to Randleman Middle, which earns a B-minus. The B-minus-rated Randleman High is known for its technical education, Future Farmers of America (FFA) program, and celebrated sports teams. "The high school football and baseball games are like Sunday church to these people. There's always a lot of people out there supporting the students," says Liles, who attended Randleman High and now volunteers as an assistant coach for the high school girls' soccer team.

Lake days and scenic views at Deep River Nature Trail

Residents can fish along the 100-mile-long shoreline of Randleman Lake, which collides with Muddy Creek and Deep River; swimming isn't allowed in the man-made reservoir, but boating, sailing and paddleboats are welcome. Randleman Park features a playground adjacent to a soccer and baseball field where local youth leagues play and practice. The 2-mile Deep River Nature Trail is ideal for running or relaxing to the sound of water cascading over rocks to the dam at Worthville Beach. Randleman Rec Center has fitness rooms, full-size basketball court and a walking track on the second floor.

Most locals grocery shop at Walmart Supercenter, roughly 2 miles away on the western border. Residents can find fast food chains like Subway and Wendy's throughout town, and locally owned restaurants are near US-220. Sir Pizza serves Italian subs and homemade spaghetti, while Betty's Kitchen bakes buttery biscuits with grits. While there are limited options for other shopping in the area, Main Street does house a few small businesses like Main St. Market and Gallery. Deep River Crossing also offers shops like Cato and Shoe Show, but according to Liles, residents like venturing out to Asheboro Mall for more retail options.

May the best food truck win

Along with the notorious NASCAR Days festival, the whole city likes to come together for Randleman High's homecoming parade which starts near the school and travels 2 miles towards Main Street. Local businesses dress up their floats, and the marching band performs as people watch on the side. The annual North Carolina Food Truck State Championship features community vendors, live music from local bands, and plenty of delicious food. During Christmas, lamp posts and buildings are strung with garland and lights downtown, and locals attend the Christmas Parade that features holiday floats and a Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
