Joan was born in Brooklyn into a vibrant Italian-American family, where large gatherings, home-cooked meals, and passionate conversations were part of everyday life. As a child, she spent her summers exploring the streams and woods of the Catskill Mountains, where her family eventually settled. These early experiences instilled in her a deep love for nature and the Hudson Valley region.
After high school, Joan pursued her artistic passions, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics and painting. She married at 22 and has been happily married for over 43 years. In 1977, after moving back to Brooklyn, she welcomed her first child and soon found herself seeking new creative outlets. She enrolled at The School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she studied graphic design and built a successful 10-year career in the field.
In 1986, Joan and her husband Jim moved their family to Woodstock, NY, with two young children in tow. While Jim commuted to law school in NYC on weekends, Joan managed the household as a full-time working parent and freelancer during the week. Despite the challenges, they knew Woodstock was the right place to raise their children and build a meaningful life rooted in community.
Joan’s journey reflects resilience, creativity, and a deep connection to the Hudson Valley. Her story continues to inspire those seeking a home in a place that offers both beauty and belonging.
