My wife and I used John J. Dean Jr. as our realtor when buying a house this year, we spoke to a number of other realtors and were impressed with his honesty and frankness, alerting us to the fact that certain areas were outside of our price range where other realtors seemed reluctant to say similar. During our initial talks, he identified a few key characteristics of properties that others tend to overlook, when it came time for open houses, he pointed us to an affordable and beautiful property with such characteristics and we quickly put down and won the offer. He helped walk us through the contingency inspections and navigate the web of legal minutia to make sure there were no unexpected surprises upon closing. John also put us in contact with various lenders, inspectors and movers which made the whole process significantly smoother. Overall we feel lucky to have had such an easy time of it and most of it is thanks to John.

I had met John several years ago when I was thinking of selling the family house after my parents had passed. He helped me review the pros and cons of purchasing the house from the estate and keeping it. As a real estate agent, you would expect or at least assume he would push to sell but not John, we reviewed in detail the pros of keeping the house. It was a beautiful +100-year-old house with all original wood and fireplace. I decided to keep the house and we went our separate ways. After some renovations and a few years, I decided to sell, and I called John. The professionalism that John and his team showed was nothing but the best. I followed his guidance or showing the house and put the house on the market. The house was shown at its best and, it was sold in a day for more than I would have imagine. I recently closed on a unit I owned in East Boston for the past 21 years. I selected John Dean as my realtor based on his successful history, positive reviews and willingness to work with me even before we signed a contract with his firm. He recommended a closing attorney (who provided a smooth closing), gave me comparable sales and market data for my unit, and agreed to provide an exclusion in our contract should my renter buy the unit he lived in.
My renter was able to buy the property, but John understood and was very professional at all times in spite of not earning a commission.
I recommend John without exception; he always returned my calls, emails, etc. and was professional and helpful at all times.

Any client would be lucky to work with John. He understands the market and has a network of colleagues who enjoy making deals with him. He is incredibly responsive and treats each client as his top priority. There were several houses that we lost out on and had we put in the price John suggested we needed to get the house, we would have gotten it. This market is tough and the "wacko effect" of going to open houses every weekend is real. He has educated us on the difference of spending money out of pocket vs using the bank's money. If you want an agent that will help steer you in the right direction and who knows every quiet and loud street in the Medford, Malden, Melrose and Stoneham market, John is your guy.

John walked us through the checklist of homebuying, and was extremely patient with us, guiding us through every step: from goal-setting and putting our needs on paper, to visiting properties of interest, to closing!
Some highlights we found extremely helpful that distinguish John from other agents:
-John has his team of people who will get you to closing seamlessly! I tend to be very thorough and did my due diligence in researching my options for almost every step (lender choice, attorney choice, home insurance, etc): I have to say, I ended up going with John's recommendations in the end. Bottomline: John could save you a lot of TIME (and consequently MONEY).
-John was ALWAYS available via phone/text and we knew we could count on him when urgent questions came up or a new listing of our liking popped up that we were eager to visit. He would also brainstorm with us and give us his sincere feedback on the properties we were considering, saving us from some "not so worthwhile" purchases. Bottomline: John is invested in his clients.

ALSO, our relationship did not end at the time of closing. John has been tremendously helpful in helping us address maintenance home needs after moving in.

Lastly, John has a great sense of humor and made us feel very comfortable from our very first meeting -it felt as if we were chatting with a friend we long knew.

Having just closed on our house with John, we cannot recommend him highly enough. My wife and had very little homebuying knowledge when we started our search, and were immediately impressed by how patient, knowledgable, and personable he was. My husband and I have John to thank for helping us buy our first home, one which we are very proud to own and happy to live in. After a brief tour of area homes, we found our current home on a listing thanks to the Trulia app. Without hesitation, John drove us to the home and found a way for us to tour the home as soon as possible. The next week, when we wanted to put in an offer, both my husband and I couldn't be at the open house, so John camped out at the house all day, met the seller, and gave us a full recap of the open house developments.

As if the initial proceedings of the house purchase didn't go well enough, John made sure that the next phases of the purchase went just as smoothly. He was on call whenever we needed to be, and was extremely responsive despite my husband being in another country while the paperwork was being signed and my working late nights. Before I say anything I have to admit that generally I don't like real estate agents, I always worry that they will help the sellers to jack up the price for the housing, and they will pressure the buyers to make offers, since they get commission fee. I was hesitated to contact agents when I was looking for property to buy. John was the first one to return my messages (shows he is on top of his game), then we made a plan and started looking for what I want for a home. The whole time I was very surprised how not pushy John was, he just showed me properties, and if I had any hesitate, he would just say it's fine, we will keep looking. And he was always very knowledgeable about the neighborhood information and be able to answer every question I had or quickly found people who can for me if he could not. There was one incident made me trust his judgement from then on. There was a condo that's within my price range and has relatively everything I wanted, so I told him I would like to put an offer on it. But after market research he did, he told me it's severely overpriced, and suggested me to make an offer at the right price. In the end, he helped me got the perfect condo with a reasonable price. I am very happy about this experience, the bidding process was very stressful, but he made it easy for me. I already mentioned and sent his information to two of my friends who said they are considering buying properties, and I highly recommend him for anyone who does not know much about house buying, like me. We have both bought a home from and sold a home with John. If I could give John more stars, I would! John was our realtor when we decided to buy a condo in the Cambridge/Somerville area. He took the time to understand exactly what we were looking for, what was a must and what was a would-like, and gave us realistic expectations of what our budget would get us. He is an expert on the Cambridge/Somerville area and is up on all of the things going on that might impact a neighborhood, like the extension of the green line. He seems to know most of the other realtors, and they obviously respect him. He guided us and helped us understand all of the paperwork, and was ultra responsive! We ended up with a condo that was even better than our expectations in a prime neighborhood of Somerville. The longer we lived in it, the more we loved it and the neighborhood. Then, two years later, we had to sell the condo to relocate to another city. Of course we called John! By the time we were ready to sell, we were already relocated halfway across the country and were not on site for the sale. I cannot express how hard and how much time John personally spent getting our condo repainted, inspected, staged and cleaned for sale. It was incredible. As far as communication goes, he was probably frustrated with us, as he was constantly in touch with updates and questions as he dealt with contractors and cleaners. He interacted with our neighbors to keep them up to date on who was coming and going in the building, and to alert them about open house dates so that they knew there would be people coming and going. He went above and beyond to make sure that we would get the best price possible on the condo. The first open house generated many, many offers and we sold it for an incredible profit, thanks to John and all the work he put in to make it look it's best, and through his contacts with other realtors to let them know a prime property would be on the market. If you want a respected, well-connected, knowledgeable realtor who will do whatever he can to find you the home you want, or to sell your home for the most money possible, John is your guy! I was lucky to have John as my agent when purchasing my house. John is oddly straightforward, something I have no experienced in realtors. He would always tell me everything he liked and did not like about a house, and being honest about the houses I viewed really helped me make better decisions. Several times I was very interested in a house, but John would do a walk through and point out many big ticket items that I missed. I honestly would have made some serious mistakes buying a house without Johns guidance. I stumbled upon John while initially looking into houses. I contacted him about an open house to try and see something in the area. He was more than happy to, but gave me the rundown on its current bid situation.. which had already gone far over my budget. John offered to meet up and give me tips for first time home buying, and be my agent if I wanted to. I didn't agree at first, but after another week of searching I realized I was having trouble. I figured why not... he seemed straightforward and nice. Sure enough I call back and he's more than happy to meet after hours at his office. I got a packet of information, rough estimates for the amount of costs, his contacts for bank/attorney if I wanted (which I did end up using), a search set up on MLS, and his cell. It was a wild ride finding a house. If I ever do any real estate business again, I will be contacting John first. I would highly recommend you do too. Things I really appreciated: - Honesty about everything - Responsiveness (Email, text and phone, he was never hard to reach for any reason) - Helpfulness (Has offered his tools, gave me extra sheetrock/lumber for a room I fixed, lent extra tile to help figure out rooms...) - Contacts (From contractors to oil, he put me in touch with all around effective people. I have not had a bad experience or bad price from a single one.) - The whole bidding process (Seems pretty obvious, he was my agent, but it went a lot smoother and a lot easier than I expected. He helped get all forms online for signing very quickly, harassed the bank/attorney to get my closing date half a month sooner, even showed up to the closing when he didn't have to... even helped point out wrong numbers for my land size!) - Deals with problems (The sellers agent did not do a single thing, John had to play phone tag and hunt the guy down to give the sellers money. I'm glad I didn't have to deal with any of that, but John did) The last thing I can say about John is that real estate is his passion. I've had so many experience with college dropouts droning their way through apartment listings, not being prepared for a single question, and honestly not caring. John truly cares about real estate and houses. If you go on a tour with him, sometimes he will remark about the architecture of a house, the layout, the type of material used on a countertop, the heating system being cast iron... little details that only come from somebody who has been doing this a long time, and has a passion for it all. -scduane

John recently helped me purchase my first home. I first met him at an open house he was showing for a collegue and was immediatley impressed with his easy going, open and friendly manner. I took a second on that property with John, and he came prepared with answers to all my questions and comps for the property, though I had no formal agreement with him. When I eventually found the property I did want, of all the agents I had met during my search process, John stood out as the one I wanted to work with because of his professionalism, preparedness and enthusiasm. We took a second on the property together, and he knew immediately what the value of the property should be. John was adamant about making sure I was purchasing the home for the right price, he had done the research, even keeping me patient for 3 weeks until the sellers eventually came back and accepted our final offer, after we had been deadlocked after preliminary negotiations. My husband and I have John to thank for helping us buy our first home, one which we are very proud to own and happy to live in. After a brief tour of area homes, we found our current home on a listing thanks to the Trulia app. Without hesitation, John drove us to the home and found a way for us to tour the home as soon as possible. We first met John Dean as we were trying to sell our house on our own. John had contacted us after seeing our ad. He was very helpful even though we made it clear that we were going to give it a try and he did help us. After the first open house weekend, I knew I didn't want this pressure, so we called John. And, right away we knew we had made the correct decision. First, John said we could get thousands more for our house given the market. And, he laid out his marketing game plan. It was clear to us that he actually has his own marketing strategy to create a buzz about each property he lists! And, did it work.
