Kai Malina Properties, LLC is vacation rental management company and real estate brokerage. My wife Rhonda and I own and operate the company. We are both licensed real estate agents in the State of Hawaii. We manage exclusively at the Honua Kai Resort and Spa in Kaanapali, Maui, Hawaii. How it started: We bought our Honua Kai unit pre-construction back in December 2005 with a scheduled closing date for January 2009. As we all know 2008 was a rough time to say the least, so we decided that we were going to self-manage our unit so we could maximize our income. Once our family heard this, they asked us to manage their unit as well. So, in January 2009 we started what would later become Kai Malina Properties, LLC. Also, during this time, I was working as a real estate broker for Whalers Realty and had several clients that were purchasing units at Honua Kai. One of them asked me about our management philosophy and I told him. He then asked us to manage the 3 units he was buying as investments, and I reluctantly agreed. as the plan was to sell condominiums, not manage them. Shortly thereafter I was asked to be the Principal Broker at Honua Kai. The one condition of taking the position was that we had to be able to continue managing the units we had agreed to manage. The developer and I reached an agreement, so I was the Principal Broker and a Real Estate Broker at Honua Kai from July 2009 to June 2016. Along the way we agreed to manage two more families’ units at Honua Kai. They too agreed with our rental philosophy. We originally managed at total of 10 units at Honua Kai- We owned one unit; our family owned a unit and we managed 8 other units for three families. We currently manage 7 units, as a couple owners including our family sold their units during the boom of early 2022. We run everything by ourselves, we do not have employees, so you will work only with us. Personal: We moved to Maui on March 31, 2005, from San Ramon, California. We currently live in Kaanapali just 5 minutes from Honua Kai. Rhonda also works for her family’s business based in Beaverton, Oregon and she is a flight attendant for United Airlines. In my prior life in California, I was an attorney with my dad’s law office in Dublin, California. I am also licensed in Hawaii (inactive), but I no longer practice law. I like to say that living in Maui is the 12th step of the attorney recovery program. We have three teenaged children.
