I live out of state, and when my father had to move out of the family home of 65 years, a relative who is a retired real estate agent from Chicago recommended her. I hadn't lived in the Chicago area for decades and didn't know much about the housing market in the area where the house is located, and wanted someone who knew what she was doing. We got the right person. Margie helped us to set a value for the house, sorting through relevant comps far more carefully than the prospective buyers did, dealt with those buyers, and handled all the paperwork efficiently and correctly. A former colleague of my father's wanted to buy the house, and we did eventually sell it to him, but only after far too much haggling. Margie knew where to draw the lines, and how to do it without killing the sale, and everything came out in the end. I've bought and sold a number of houses over the years, and know how important it is to have a good agent. I recommend her hightly.

Margie Smigel and I have never met in person. We found her because she's the agent with the most experience in the Loop. We purchased a condo sight unseen, and Margie was the perfect agent to act on our behalf. She visited every property, Zooming with us during the tour, and sharing her impressions and opinions. Once we found the right home for us, Margie's inspection was very accurate and we had no surprises when we got the keys and opened the front door. Margie also has a high ethical standard. In an area where not all listing agents and sellers disclose problems, she asked the right questions and reached out to her network for answers from third parties. I am SEVERELY delayed with this review! We were initially referred by the University of Chicago to Margie in 2003 when we moved from Ann Arbor MI to Hyde Park. We were shown some properties by two other agents, but very quickly decided to stick with Margie exclusively. She clearly knew the area, its histories, and was wise to the developers. She helped us to feel confident about our condo purchase.

15 years later, I got a job in NYC and we needed to sell our home quickly. Like so many homeowners at the time, our home value had declined during the market crash of 2008; additionally, we had to make substantial repairs to prepare to sell. The first agent we contacted suggested an asking price that was below what we had initially paid. And then we remembered Margie and wondered if she was still working the area. She was!

Margie stepped in and immediately knew what to do. She told us what repairs to make and what to leave as-is. She made referrals for top-notch expert vendors to do things I didn't know were a thing--Like painting our tub to make it look Like new!

By the time we listed our unit, we got an offer in less than 2 weeks, and very close to our asking price. We were elated. We closed before our furniture arrived in NYC.

Margie is fabulous. Her energy and enthusiasm shined through her voice the first time we spoke to her and made us decide to buy a property when we were totally giving up on the idea. Her energy and enthusiasm lasts through the very long process of starting the search to closing the deal. She is always at your side, always available to listen to you, to give you advice or just hear you complain about the things no one can change but you have to accept. She also has great resources for financing and attorney review that you can use and trust. Having dealt with couple of brokers in the past years, I was certain I like to go with an option like Redfin since I didn't see much value in what a broker does. But, Margie made me want to work with a broker. It is a big source of relief to have her support through all the ups and downs of the process.

She listens carefully and picks up on your preferences; she is not afraid to make her own recommendations and offer her expert guidance, but if we had a difference of opinion she always respected our wishes. She was our agent when we bought our condo in 2008, and she was our agent selling our condo in 2019. In the years between, we periodically worked with her while she represented other units in our building. Margie helped us earlier this year to find our first home--a nice condo in Hyde Park, Chicago. As first-time homebuyers, we never worked with any other realtors and our review here will be limited by that lack of experience. That said, we can confidently say that it was a pleasure to work with Margie. We especially appreciate that she kindly and patiently guided us throughout the process but never imposed her choices or preferences upon us. Although she couldn't physically be in Chicago during the process, she made herself highly accessible via email and phone and never failed to respond to our requests--even at odd hours.
