About Roelof
He was born and raised in a small farm town in the beautiful countryside of Holland. He worked on his family’s farm through high school, but when he graduated, it was time for him to go to a university to get his degree. He was excited about the future he had planned for himself. He went to study mechanical engineering at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. However, after only a year into his studies, things became increasingly difficult. He was getting frequent headaches, having trouble staying focused, and falling behind in his classes because of it. He had no choice but to leave school. He was devastated. What was he going to do with his life without a degree? How could he get his degree with the struggles he was facing? Unsure of the road ahead, he joined the Dutch Military for one year. It was a requirement, back then, that all able-bodied men had to serve at least one year in the military. There, he learned to drive big rigs transporting munitions. Living and working on a farm his whole life, he was accustomed to such large machinery, so he quickly learned the trade. He enjoyed his time in the service, but after the year was up, he was again faced with the question of what he would do next. He had always wanted to travel to America. He thought, “what better time to go on an adventure?” He went off and traveled first to Canada, where he found a seasonal job at a local potato farm. At the end of the season, he bought a car with the money he had saved. Seeking his next excursion, he decided to see the States. He had family down in Florida, so he set off down the east coast, stopping wherever his heart desired along the way. He was having the time of his life and truly venturing farther than ever before. After visiting relatives in Florida, he was eager for his next adventure - so he headed west. His father happened to sit next to somebody on an airplane who told him about a dairy farm in southern California. He went straight there, asked for a job, and was hired as the calf feeder. After working there for a few weeks, his wife, Caroline, started dating. As that year was coming to an end, he knew he needed to go back to school. He still wanted to get his degree in engineering, and now it was time to go “home.” Carolien and he continued a long-distance relationship through written letters, but it was difficult to be so far away from each other. As their feelings grew stronger, the distance felt greater. He wanted to be closer to his love, so he moved back across the ocean to be with her. He was soon accepted into the University of California, Berkeley where he received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Engineering. After several years in the corporate engineering world, he realized his heart wasn’t in it and desired a change that would allow him to help people and experience more flexibility for his family. He went into real estate in 2007 and has never looked back. With engineering, he liked what he did, but now he loves what he does!
There was once a time in his life when his path seemed uncertain; when he didn’t know what he would do next or where life would take him. At times, he was terrified, stressed, and anxious that his plans didn’t work out. But the wonderful life that came from that uncertainty was so much better than one he could’ve planned for himself.
