Ridgefield has a robust art scene

Ridgefield, a small town with a long history, has a vibrant downtown area packed with activity. Along the wide sidewalks of Main Street, restaurant patrons dine under the shade of umbrellas, and tourists stroll between clothing boutiques. Farther along Main Street, historic Colonial Revival and Queen Anne-style residences hide behind rows of tall oaks, and the grand stone steeple of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church stands as a visual reminder of Ridgefield’s colonial past. Today, art and culture abound in Ridgefield. The town is home to a contemporary art museum, an active theatrical playhouse and a performing arts theater that brings in a variety of performers — from magicians to acrobats and everything in between. Housing prices reflect a high demand, which is driven in part by the school system’s stellar reputation.

CHIRP Concerts and the Ridgefield Holiday Stroll

Some of Ridgefield residents’ favorite events are Concert Happenings In Ridgefield’s Parks, or CHIRP Concerts, which happen once or twice a week in the summer months. “They’re a great excuse to meet up with friends,” says Sandra Juliano, a licensed Realtor and associated broker with Berkshire Hathaway New England, who has lived in Ridgefield for more than 23 years. “You can bring a picnic to Ballard Park, throw down a blanket, and let the kids run free. Each week, there is a different musical genre.” In December, there is a holiday stroll in the downtown. “There are horse-drawn carriages with jingle bells, and kids from the local dance studio pose in the shop windows like mannequins. All the shops open their doors, and there are carolers and ice sculptures,” Juliano says.

Boutiques and restaurants in downtown Ridgefield

Ridgefield is a shopping and dining hub for many of the surrounding small towns. Locals can find chain stores, such as Stop & Shop and Marshalls, but the clothing boutiques and small markets are what make the town distinct. They can browse the clothing options at She la la or The Boutique at Susi Laura, and pick up unique baby goods at Sammy + Nat. Milillo Farms offers prepared foods to help make mid-week cooking more manageable, and Ridgefield Organics & Specialty Market has a variety of fresh vegetables and other ingredients. Residents can also join the CSA at the Hickories Farm to get fresh produce all year round. Restaurants like Luc's Café and The Lantern are popular among locals and tourists, and those with a sweet tooth can’t resist the homemade candy and ice cream at Deborah Ann's Sweet Shoppe. Bareburger, along Danbury Road, offers organic burgers made from everything from wagyu beef and grass-fed elk to sweet potatoes and kale.

High demand and low supply in Ridgefield

Housing in Ridgefield spans a wide range of possibilities. “We have everything under the sun,” Juliano says. “There are apartments, condos, little lake houses on the north end of town that have sold for as low as $350,000 and $12 million horse properties. Normally, we have a couple hundred homes on the market at any given time. Currently, it’s very challenging to find places.” Ridgefield’s zoning laws specify that lots must be at least 1 acre, which makes it tricky for new construction. Buyers may find a two-bedroom condo priced around $400,000, and a townhouse might sell in the mid-$700,000s. Historic homes from the late 1800s in the center of Ridgefield usually top $1 million, but periodically, homes priced less than $1 million come on the market.
