The Rock Island neighborhood that almost wasn't
Longview almost didn’t exist. During the Civil War-era, then-Mayor Bailey Davenport owned the undeveloped land of this West End neighborhood of Rock Island. Despite pleas from the community, Davenport did not want to give up his 190 acres to help expand the city, a stance he held until his death in 1890. Over the next 20 years, though, homes and a community park filled the area, becoming the neighborhood of Longview. The name refers to the view of the surrounding Quad Cities region that can be seen from Longview Park. This urban community is primarily residential with century-old homes, many of which need renovations. Several organizations work to keep the neighborhood clean and welcoming, including the Longview Neighborhood Coalition, Friends of Longview, Rock Island Preservation Society and Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. “I actually grew up in Longview, and what I loved about living there was the people,” says Thurgood Brooks, the West End Revitalization Coordinator for the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. “I call them 'real people.' Sure, the neighborhood is too compact, but you’re surrounded by real people and families who work every day and have real needs.”

A variety of homes from the turn of the 20th century
“Longview has homes that were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, so Victorian-style houses are sprinkled throughout the area,” says Shelly Phares, a local Realtor with Ruhl & Ruhl Realtors. “The homes are more affordable than other areas because of the age of the houses.” Along with Victorian architecture, Longview’s grid-pattern streets are lined with American Foursquares and smaller bungalows. Homes are built close together on lots of about a tenth of an acre, allowing for small front yards and narrow, fenced-in backyards. Residents can park on the street or in a back alleyway, where there is typically a detached garage. Most houses have two to four bedrooms and around 1,500 to 2,000 square feet of living space. Move-in-ready homes start at around $60,000 for those without the latest modifications. They sell for as high as $130,000 with brand-new renovations. Meanwhile, houses in need of work range from $18,000 to $50,000.

Distant views and water slides at Longview Park
Neighbors have been visiting Longview Park for more than 115 years. “There’s a bottom and top portion of the park,” says Brooks, “and there’s a distinct view from on top of the hill that people appreciate.” A bike path starts at the top of the hill next to the beach volleyball and pickleball courts, zig-zagging all the way down, then passing a basketball court and playground at the bottom. There’s also a railroad-themed water park called Whitewater Junction, featuring four water slides, and a conservatory, where residents have been growing plants since 1937. The hill itself serves as a winter attraction for sledding. The neighborhood organization, Friends of Longview, works to maintain the park. “They have a deep connection to the park,” says Brooks. “We’re actually working with them on a tree-equity program. We planted 13 trees in 2024, and we’re looking to plant more in 2025.” The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center supports the neighborhood by providing free after-school programs and summer camps, family counseling and other services.

Students may attend Rock Island Academy, which earns a C from Niche. They’ll go on to Washington Junior High, graded a B-minus and ranked the fourth-most diverse middle school in Illinois. Rock Island High, called “Rocky” by locals, is also graded a B-minus and ranked the state’s 13th-most diverse high school, which Brooks found to be a valuable part of his educational journey. “I’m a believer in real-world experiences,'' he says. "You’d be hard-pressed to find a better experience than a high school where students speak 40-plus languages.”
