Well-maintained golf courses and a croquet lawn
Twenty-seven holes of golf wind throughout Sun City. Residents can play discounted games at either the 18-hole Timber Creek Golf Course or the nine-hole Sierra Pines Golf Course. The former begins at the 52,000-square-foot Timber Creek Lodge in the neighborhood’s southern section. Additional amenities at this sprawling facility include an outdoor recreational pool, an indoor lap pool, and pickleball, tennis and bocce courts. Residents can also play on an outdoor croquet court even the Queen of Hearts would envy. “The golf course staff maintains the croquet lawn like a putting green,” Schlaegel says. He adds that residents can bond with their neighbors by participating in various chartered clubs. These include collectives focused on bridge, dance, drama, travel and more.

Golf cart parades for the holidays
Whether they golf or not, many Sun City residents navigate the neighborhood on their golf carts. These play a role in several seasonal community events, including the Veteran’s Day and Christmas parades. “People sit outside and watch decorated golf carts go through the neighborhood,” Schlaegel says. Locals also gather every July 3 for an Independence Day fireworks show, which Schlaegel says is “huge” and “must last at least 20 minutes.” Summertime often brings live bands to the community’s outdoor amphitheater, while music is always playing in the lodge’s bar and lounge.

After pleasant days of socializing, Sun City locals retreat to single-level, Mediterranean Revival and Craftsman-style homes. “Once you get to a certain age, you don’t want to negotiate those stairs anymore,” Schlaegel says. Residents select from over 20 different floor plans ranging between 878 and 2,600 square feet; lots average less than 1/5 acre. One-bedroom homes start in the $400,000s, while three-bedrooms can reach the mid-$900,000s. Pricier homes often come with larger-than-average lots and extra garage space — perhaps even a separate carport for the golf cart.

Day-to-day needs across the street
Sun City is much closer to shopping and dining options than it once was. “Before, we’d have to drive half a mile to Pleasant Grove to get groceries at Raley’s,” Schlaegel says. “Now, we have a Safeway being built just adjacent to us and a Raley’s O-N-E Market just across the street to the north.” This specialized supermarket features a heightened focus on organic foods and offers various wellness resources to customers. Well-known businesses surrounding it include Chipotle, Great Clips and The Habit Burger Grill. Residents can also make reservations at the Timber Creek Lodge’s upscale, in-house restaurant, Timbers at the Lodge. Whether during Sunday brunch or a typical meal any other day, visitors enjoy Timbers’ calm atmosphere, full bar and panoramic windows.

Local grandparents can quickly visit nearby schools to watch talent shows, soccer matches and graduations. Highly rated schools within 1 mile include Blue Oaks Elementary and Robert C.
