A park-filled northside neighborhood
Originally developed for agriculture, by the 1900s, O’Fallon was a popular residential neighborhood with abundant wildlife at the 127-acre O’Fallon Park. During the mid-1900s, the combination of St. Louis’ segregation laws and the exodus of industrial employers led to the neighborhood’s decline.
However, times are changing as community organizations invest in restoration and development. With ample access to nature and a quick commute downtown, O’Fallon is becoming a popular residential area again.
Classic St. Louis architecture
O’Fallon’s extensive collection of homes consists of the styles that define St. Louis architecture: red brick row houses, sturdy Craftsmans and cottage-like Tudors. Roughly 16% of O’Fallon buildings are vacant, but many century-old houses have been modernized with fresh flooring and new windows.
“Locals are renovating and investing in their homes,” says Walls Real Estate Co. agent Paula Brown. “The neighborhood is coming back.” New and renovated homes are priced in the low $100,000s, and older houses in need of repairs are listed under $100,000.
With 19 homes sold in 2023 and 10 active listings in April 2024, O’Fallon’s housing market isn’t experiencing the major inventory shortages present in many neighborhoods.
O’Fallon Park and Lake
One of the major benefits of this neighborhood is its proximity to O’Fallon Park, a 127-acre space established in 1908. Thanks to established maple and walnut trees planted throughout the park, O’Fallon Park has plenty of shaded sitting areas. In the center of the park, the O’Fallon Park Lake offers public fishing, where locals reel in catfish, trout and sunfish that the Missouri Conservation Department regularly restocks. Between basketball and tennis courts, picnic areas, grassy fields and fishing opportunities, there’s plenty to do at O’Fallon Park.
In the spring, summer or fall, a detour off the walking path leads to the One Africa! One Nation! Farmers Market. The market’s tents rotate seasonally, from local produce vendors and artisans to storytelling stations fit for the whole family.
The O’Fallon Park Rec Complex is a YMCA facility and aquatic center with water slides that twist like the nearby Mississippi River. This YMCA branch offers reduced-income fares to accommodate visitors of all income levels and includes access to workout equipment, exercise classes and childcare/afterschool programs.
St. Louis public schools
Students may attend Ashland Elementary School and Yeatman-Liddell Middle School, both rated D+ by Niche and located within the neighborhood. Vashon High School, also rated D+, is known for its exceptional basketball teams, with boys’ and girls' teams taking the state championships in 2023. These public schools provide more than education to the community. Yeatman-Liddell is one of four St. Louis schools with a mobile food mart where fruits, vegetables and other foods are freely given to families. These aren’t the only educational resources kids can tap into; they also can go to North Campus, a nonprofit in O’Fallon that offers free after-school tutoring.
Save-A-Lot on groceries
The nearest grocery store is Save-A-Lot in the adjoining Penrose neighborhood, and an Aldi is located under a mile east on Natural Bridge Avenue. O’Fallon’s streetcorners are peppered with locally-owned convenience stores, so it’s a quick walk to pick up drinks, snacks and last-second ingredients without leaving the neighborhood. O’Fallon is full of tasty takeout spots such as Happy Chop Suey. Customers rave about its St. Paul sandwiches—a St. Louis classic consisting of a fried egg foo young patty layered with lettuce, tomato, pickles and mayo and served on white bread.
Crime
The CAP Index, a predictive algorithm used to estimate the relative crime rates in different areas, scored O’Fallon a 6 out of 10.
St. Louis MetroBus and driving downtown
O’Fallon is under 5 miles north of downtown, and the drive takes around 11 minutes, depending on traffic. The West Florissant/Adelaide bus stop has a direct route downtown that takes about 20 minutes and leaves every 30 minutes. The nearest airport is St. Louis Lambert International (STL), located just under 10 miles northwest of O’Fallon. “You can get from O’Fallon to the airport or to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in no time,” says Brown.
