Saint Louis community coming together in The Gate
When residents of The Gate walk into Have a Cow Cattle Co., they'll find locally-raised beef and breakfast foods available for purchase, alongside T-shirts and merchandise that read "Learn to love your enemy." Owner and founder Steve St. Pierre says, "Saint Louis is divided racially like many big cities, but all walks are welcomed here in The Gate." Housed in a recently redesigned building, Have a Cow Cattle Co. is part of a wave of new construction and businesses that have come to this community, once considered in decline. Following block-busting practices in the 1960s and 70s, new businesses and homes built in recent decades have "Helped the neighborhood gain its momentum back," St. Pierre says. Public housing facilities can still be found in The Gate, sitting alongside large Victorian homes from the 1800s. Just over 2 miles from Downtown Saint Louis, The Gate offers quick access to the city alongside nearby neighborhood amenities and small businesses within walking distance.

New construction alongside Victorians from the 1800s
“After new residential construction revitalized the Botanical Heights neighborhood, developers moved east to The Gate with a similar goal,” says Keller William Realty St. Louis Broker Associate Nick Maynes. Most homes in The Gate are two-story builds on narrowly spaced lots, and many of its modern houses include Classical Revival influences. The newer properties complement the Victorian homes in the neighborhood from the 1800s. Prices range between $250,000 to $450,000 and houses tend only average 40 days on the market, faster than the national average. Those looking for something smaller can also find apartments for rent in buildings like Lafayette Terrace Apartments. The Gate ranks slightly higher than the national average with a 5 of out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score.

Walk to locally owned shopping and dining
Homes aren’t the only new construction happening in The Gate. Top Golf recently opened its first driving range in the city right at the intersection of Chouteau and Compton avenue. With a high-tech driving range, drinks and hot food like pizza and chicken sandwiches, the facility has become a destination for families and large groups. A small shopping center can be found right on Jefferson Avenue. It features a Save A Lot where residents can get groceries and other options like Subway, Family Dollar and a local gym, Fit City STL. Have A Cow Cattle Co. is a restaurant that serves all-day breakfast, but doubles as an Urban Farm Store selling fresh produce from a local ranch. Another locally-owned option is Ranell's Market & Cafe, which sells southern-style Soul Food like fried catfish and a rib tip dinner. In addition to Downtown Saint Louis, there are also a few nearby nightlife spots, including Square One Brewery and Old Rock House, which have live music and drinks.
