Scenic countryside community close to the state capital
South of Oregon's capital city, Salem Hills is a rural neighborhood that allows homeowners to enjoy the abundant natural scenery of the Willamette Valley. A drive through this pastoral neighborhood can feel like something out of a movie, with wineries and Christmas tree farms dotting the landscape. "It's beautiful. There are 5-acre-plus properties with luxury, custom homes," says Shannon Banke, a Realtor with Zenith Realty LLC and longtime area resident. "A lot of people like the quiet out there, but it has good access too." Liberty Road and Interstate 5 offer a quick trip into Salem, with one of the city's busiest commercial areas just 5.5 miles from the neighborhood.

Plenty of parks for adventures in Salem Hills
With Salem Hills' rural setting, several natural parks provide outdoor recreation. Joryville Park has nearly 28 acres of natural wooded space to explore. There are paved and dirt trails that follow a stream through the woods. The park also has equestrian trails and a horse-riding arena. Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge is a large natural area that serves as a habitat for several species, with the primary goal of being a winter habitat for geese. Visitors can explore several wetland trails through the refuge and try to spot wildlife such as geese, turtles, hawks and blackbirds. The Ankeny Hill Nature Center is a developed part of the refuge with a short walking trail, overlook and educational materials. Golfers might enjoy a round at Creekside Golf Club, a par-73 course designed by PGA Tour winner Peter Jacobson. The club also has a swimming pool and restaurant.
Reaping the bounty of Willamette Valley agriculture
For a rural neighborhood, Salem Hills has plenty of activity. Several wineries are located in the community, including Ankeny Vineyard. This winery has been growing grapes for over 40 years and focuses on Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. The food at the tasting room uses ingredients from the winery's own garden and other local sources. Stomp by Croft Vineyards is a tasting room on the neighborhood's west side on the banks of the Willamette River. This rustic, lodge-style winery has a menu of small plates and wine made with organic grapes. There are multiple spots around the neighborhood to cut down a Christmas tree, including Skyline Christmas Tree Farm. Several types of trees are available here, and the farm's gift shop serves hot chocolate and cider to enjoy by the fire pit. Just across I-5, Enchanted Forest entertained Salem families for decades. This local amusement park has rides, a European Village and live shows.
Countryside homes in the scenic Willamette Valley
Custom homes line the hilly, winding roads in Salem Hills, allowing a choice of ranch-style, Craftsman, cabins and French Countryside houses. Many are on 5-acre lots, with a few properties sitting on 10 acres. Several of the homes in the countryside were built from the 1970s to the 1990s, but there are some subdivisions closer to city limits with 21st-century houses. The large acreage properties often have outbuildings or shops where homeowners can store an RV or boat or even have horses. Houses on less than 1 acre typically cost between $600,000 to $1 million. Larger properties cost between $800,000 and $1.5 million. The Chinook subdivision has some of the highest-priced homes in the area and charges an HOA fee of $375 per year.

There are several nearby stores for home goods and groceries. "Kuebler is the main artery for shopping. The new Costco is out there on Kuebler. Everybody always asks me, 'Is Costco close?'" says Banke. In addition to Costco, stores like Walmart, Safeway and WinCo Foods are nearby.
