Living near Joint Base San Antonio
For those who want to be near San Antonio without being right in the middle of it, Candlewood Park can fit the bill. New homeowners are also drawn to Candlewood Park “for the affordability and access to the military bases,” says Katie Griffin-Ross, San Antonio native and third-generation Realtor at RE/MAX Associates. Candlewood Park is located about 12 miles east of downtown San Antonio between Fort Sam and Randolph Air Force Base. A small creek and green space separate the subdivisions in the northeast of the community from the industrial center to the southwest. For those who prioritize proximity to Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), as well as to major shopping centers, living in Candlewood Park allows reasonable commutes to popular areas.
Miller Ranch subdivisions offer brick traditional style homes.
San Antonio's new single-family homes at competitive prices
Residential streets have narrow sidewalks, young trees and modest front lawns. Some yards have added privacy with wooden fences. “There are preowned and newer constructions along Foster Road and Binz Engleman Road,” Griffin-Ross says. Candlewood Park is made up of 21st-century gable-front tract homes. There are one and two-story models, and nearly all feature an attached garage. Two to four-bedroom homes cost between $200,000 and $300,000. As of April 2024, prices have decreased by 9% over the past 12 months and there is a roughly seven-month supply of homes on the market. Candlewood Park and Miller Ranch are the two subdivisions in this community; Miller Ranch is the newer of the two. It includes a park with a playground and a short walking trail. Of the nearly 1,500 homes in the neighborhood, 73% of residents are homeowners.
Students can grow and learn at Candlewood Elementary School.
Neighborhood schools & Wagner High just across Foster Road
Candlewood Park is home to Hopkins Elementary and Candlewood Elementary schools. Both feed into Henry Metzger Middle School, which is just a short drive away. All three schools score a C on Niche. Across Foster Road, Wagner High School boasts a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1 and earns a C-plus on Niche. Several schools in the Judson Independent School District offer specialized open-enrollment programs; Candlewood Elementary and Wagner High’s programs are STEM-focused.
Interstates 10 and 410 border the area for quick access around the San Antonio.
Easy access to Interstate 10
For those commuting to Houston, Candlewood Park is conveniently located close to Interstate 10. For those who prefer public transportation, there are three bus stops at the northeast corner of the community. Veterans, military members, their families and civilian emergency patients can receive care at Brooke Army Medical Center 6 miles away. And when it’s time for a change of scenery, San Antonio International Airport is 15 miles away.
Candlewood Park's fast food options include Jack in the Box.
Shopping at Brooks City Base and The Forum
For a quick bite, Candlewood Park offers familiar fast food spots like McDonald’s and Jack in the Box. A Walmart at the northeast corner of Candlewood Park is a convenient stop for groceries and household items. But for major shopping, The Forum at Olympia Parkway in Selma is an outdoor shopping center about 15 miles northeast with national chains like Panera Bread and Target. Locals can also drive south on I-10 toward Brooks City Base, which has a Sam’s Club, Best Buy and other big box chains.
Locals play pick up basketball and walk the trails at Sunrise Park.
Walking to Miller Ranch Park
Candlewood Park homes are within walking distance of area parks. Residents can check out the playground at Miller Ranch Park, the football field at Friendship Park and the walking trail at Sunrise Park. Other than sidewalks, Candlewood Park does not have a lot of bike paths or lanes to accommodate cyclists.
Celebrating San Antonio culture
Although the bowling alley at Turner Club offers a place to kick back and relax, it’s generally expected to “get in your car to hop somewhere else for entertainment,” Griffin-Ross says. For example, San Antonio’s biggest festival, Fiesta San Antonio, takes place downtown in La Villita. Since 1891, this annual celebration has brought the whole city together for eleven days of music, food and activities to honor the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto.
The weather in southern Texas
Potential homeowners should know that San Antonio is prone to extreme heat. Additionally, Candlewood Park could experience heavy wind gusts during hurricane season.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
