East San Antonio embraces the name “Military City, USA”
“They call San Antonio ‘Military City, USA,’ but Converse really embodies that moniker,” says Danny Lee, Economic Development Specialist at the Converse Economic Development Corporation. “Having a large military base skirt our northern city limit, JBSA-Randolph, and Fort Sam Houston just a few miles down the road, many of our residents are current or former military. Many end up coming back to retire in our community because they fell in love with it when they were stationed here.” East San Antonio is a growing residential neighborhood on the south side of Converse, and residents here enjoy a quiet lifestyle in newly built homes in this tight-knit military town. For many, it’s close enough to San Antonio while maintaining a small-town country feel, and the military community here considers each other family.

New developments outside San Antonio
Housing in East San Antonio is mostly newly built two-story contemporary traditional-style homes, often with brick, vinyl or limestone siding, and many have front-facing garages. Most homes have three to five bedrooms and belong to planned communities. Since the area has only recently been developed and sits away from denser urban areas, residents in East San Antonio enjoy wide streets and plenty of open Texas sky. Plus, “as higher home prices have hit major cities like San Antonio and New Braunfels, Converse is still seen as affordable, especially for younger families,” Lee says. Prices start around $200,000 for a three-bedroom home and get as high as $500,000 for a multiunit investment property. The median price in East San Antonio is about $280,000.

The closest hospital to the neighborhood is Brooke Army Medical Center, about six miles northwest, and the nearest airport is the San Antonio International Airport, 15 miles northwest. San Antonio’s VIA Metropolitan Transit serves Converse with a bus route that connects residents to downtown San Antonio.

Homestyle Mexican food and shopping at Walmart and H-E-B
There’s no shortage of homestyle Mexican food around East San Antonio, with dining options like El Sabrosito Mexican Restaurant and Dos Jaliscos Mexican Restaurant, both neighborhood favorites for Mexican eats in a laidback setting. For a sweet treat, residents head to La Popular Bakery & Taqueria, which serves pan dulce and other Mexican pastries, or Tropicana Ice Cream, which serves ice cream, mangonadas and other snacks and drinks. Most get groceries at the neighborhood H-E-B and get the rest of their shopping done at Walmart.

Spending time outside in Converse
To spend time outside, locals hang out at Converse City Park, an ample open space with walking and biking paths, a playground, sports fields and a picnic area. It’s also home to the Converse Swimming Pool, where residents cool off in the summertime. Nearby, Northampton Park is another popular option, with tree-lined trails, a playground and a splash pad. West of the neighborhood, Sunrise Park and Miller Ranch Park offer additional recreational activities, the former featuring large oak trees and a walking trail that loops the park and the latter having a smaller walking trail along with a playground and plenty of room for dogs to play.
