In June, the sound of fireworks signifies the end of Dan Patch Days, a weekend-long festival in Savage Community Park. It’s a tradition that dates back to the 1950s, when Savage, Minnesota was still a small farming community on the outskirts of Minneapolis. “They decided to name [the festival] after this racehorse, Dan Patch. And the city itself named after his owner, Marion Savage,” explains Mayor Janet Williams. Over the past century, the city’s population has grown exponentially, and fields of grain have given way to brand-new subdivisions. Today, Savage is about 90% developed. “There were just a few hundred people in town when I was a boy,” says Will Williams, Mayor Williams’ husband and historical society board member; he spent his childhood here in the 1940s and ‘50s. “Now we’re about 33, maybe 34,000 people.” According to Will, “Savage was also very important in World War II. We had an army camp here – Camp Savage.
