Get lost in the natural beauty of Windsor Forest, a residential community tucked away on the outskirts of Savannah. Nestled between the Vernon and Little Ogeechee rivers just before they bend toward the Atlantic, Windsor Forest provides residents quiet and serenity free from the hassle of downtown through traffic.

Immerse yourself in the residential streets of Windsor Forest, where flowering crepe myrtles and pink azaleas accent brick ranch-style homes. Positioned away from downtown, lots are roomier and homes sit on spacious magnolia-filled lawns, while the occasional palm tree-lined walkway reminds you that you’re still in coastal Georgia. Throughout Windsor Forest, you’ll also find Minimal Traditional models with front stoops, brick cottages with front-gabled roofs and Cape Cods with gabled dormers and front porches. The Berkshire Woods subdivision offers the occasional Greek Revival or split-level home situated on quiet cul-de-sacs. Homes in Windsor Forest range between $200,000 and $450,000 — depending on floor plan and subdivision.

Venture deeper into the forest and homes closer to the water range from $400,000 to $650,000 — but can climb to $3 million. Grander in design, these are typically New Traditional Craftsman-inspired homes, although other options include ranch-style homes with larger floor plans, Colonial Revivals and a few mansions situated on sprawling estates and featuring inground swimming pools and outdoor basketball courts. A select few homes have private docks that provide access to the marsh leading to the Little Ogeechee River.

School-age children can attend Windsor Forest Elementary, which offers a Gifted Education Program with an emphasis on STEAM, and Southwest Middle schools. Older students can attend Windsor Forest High School, recently named one of five AP Honors Schools by the Georgia Department of Education. As 2023’s AP Expansion School, Windsor Forest High generated a 25% growth in AP student participation. Parents also have the option to send their children to Savannah Country Day School, rated the No. 1 private school in Savannah. Serving students from ages preschool through 12th grade, Savannah Country Day School boasts an 8:1 teacher ratio and over 40 AP and honors courses, plus the majority of faculty hold advanced degrees.

Take the kids to Windsor Park to climb through the tunnels and glide down the slide on the park’s oak-shaded playground. Recently renovated, Joseph Tribble Park offers a brand-new human-made lake. Take a stroll around the walking trail that circumnavigates the shoreline. Kids can catch some air on the park’s swing set or get dizzy on the merry-go-round. For a quieter environment, take a book to nearby John Henry Murphy Park and read beneath the serene sway of pine trees. This cozy pocket park offers seclusion among cypress and pine, as well as a Little Free Library to exchange your favorite paperbacks with neighbors. For more active recreation, tee off at La Vida Golf Club. This semi-private golf course is open to the public Monday through Wednesday but is always accepting applications for new membership. Become a member and enjoy La Vida’s 18-hole course any day of the week.

Need to check items off your weekly shopping list? There’s plenty of options along Abercorn Street, including Publix in the Largo Plaza shopping center. Just a few blocks down Abercorn, swing by B&D Burgers for a bite to eat. A Savannah favorite for over 20 years, B&D Burgers dishes out premium beef patties and delicious sides, such as corn nuggets and pickle chips. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the alligator sliders for a wildly different flavor.

Quiet and removed from the bustle of downtown, Windsor Forest is a nook of natural beauty within reach of historic Savannah.
