Back in 2011, NBA champion LeBron James had a vision. The hometown hero who attended the Akron public schools from kindergarten through eighth grade knew first-hand the challenges of growing up in the inner-city and sought to make a difference. That difference came in the form of the I Promise School – a learning facility born from the deep connection between LeBron and the community that raised him. Through an innovative partnership with Akron Public Schools and The LeBron James Family Foundation, the I Promise School, which opened its doors in 2018, is unlike any other educational facility in the area. The school implements specialized programming, including an extended school day, a STEM curriculum and cocurricular educational initiatives. With a focus on academics and character building, the school embraces an approach that keeps students engaged, encouraged and living an active, healthy lifestyle. The school enrolls students in starting first grade and going all the way through eighth grade. To encourage achievement and success, students who maintain a 3.0 GPA move on to receive free tuition to the University of Akron – a potentially life-changing opportunity made possible through community partnerships with the University of Akron, The LeBron James Family Foundation and JPMorgan Chase.
