Kenmore-Garfield high school opened in 2017 after a merger between Garfield High School, in Akron’s Firestone Park neighborhood, and Kenmore High School, in Akron’s Kenmore neighborhood. A brand-new, 275,000-square-foot campus, completed in 2022, houses students at the site of the former Garfield High School in Firestone Park. One of six high schools in the Akron Public School district, it has a student body of around 800 students who live in southwest Akron or qualify for open enrollment. Kenmore-Garfield scored low in many of the Ohio State Report Card components, according to the latest available data, but its graduation rate (77.5 percent) has steadily climbed year over year since 2014. Students can take advantage of a wide range of academic, athletic and enrichment programs, including college and career prep pathways. Working with local colleges and businesses, Kenmore-Garfield offers special programs to ready students for careers in manufacturing, engineering, information technology, construction, culinary arts, nursing and more. Students are also able to earn college credit through the district’s College & Career Academies program. The school offers a robust athletics program with baseball, bowling, basketball, cross country, football, softball, soccer, tennis, track, volleyball and wrestling. Students compete as part of the Akron City Series. What I enjoyed about the school is the teachers really cared about your education and tried to help the students the best of their ability for a successful future. What I wish I could have changed would be that teachers would teach students about how to do their taxes etc.
