The Steel Academy is a tuition-free public community school located in Akron’s Chapel Hill neighborhood. With an enrollment of about 125 students, Steel serves sixth through 12th-grade students who are seeking an alternative to the traditional public school experience.
Many students at The Steel Academy face learning challenges due to ADHD and disorders along the autism spectrum. Offering additional support and alternative education pathways, Steel Academy helps ready students who learn differently for careers and higher education.
In addition to specialized education programs, The Steel Academy offers a range of extracurricular and athletic programs, including basketball, cheerleading, steel drum band, choir, drama, and various clubs. Students may also take advantage of the College Credit Plus program, allowing them to earn college credit while they work towards their high school diploma.
The Steel Academy has worked to improve its grades in recent years as it continues to offer a valuable alternative pathway for students who struggle to fit into mainstream learning environments.
