Situated near the heart of Albuquerque’s Old Town since 1966, Reginald F. Chavez Elementary School honors the neighborhood’s history and traditions while nurturing learning. The neighborhood’s distinctive centuries-old cottonwood trees surround the school. Irrigation ditches and active fields supporting crops and livestock are right down the street.
With students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, the school stands on a long tradition of curriculum and activities related to the cultural richness of its community.
For instance, it's a dual-language school in which students learn content and literacy in Spanish and English.
If you visit the school at the right time, you might hear students rehearsing the celebratory vocals and horns of mariachi music, as they learn and maintain one of their neighborhood’s artistic traditions.
