Ann Arbor’s Mitchell Elementary School serves over 400 public school students in pre-kindergarten through grade five. Most live within the city's Southeast neighborhood. The school is named after educator Mary Mitchell, who served area schools as a teacher, principal and district superintendent. Along with Scarlett Middle School, Mitchell Elementary is part of a unique collaboration with the University of Michigan School of Education to engage parents and guardians in their children’s education. As part of this collaboration, the program also provides professional development opportunities for teachers. All elements of the collaboration are geared toward improving education at the two schools. Mitchell Elementary is authorized as a World School by the International Baccalaureate Organization. As part of this multifaceted program, Mitchell students begin foreign language study at an early age. Students in kindergarten through grade two take Spanish, while students in grades three to five choose between Spanish and Arabic. Mitchell Elementary students enjoy more individual attention from their teachers due to small class size. The school boasts an average student-teacher ratio of 11-to-1. That’s significantly better than the Michigan statewide average of about 17-to-1. The Mitchell school day doesn’t end with classes. Students participate in organized sports without the pressure of team competition and also join clubs. The school’s Parent Teacher Organization helps coordinate fun events for students throughout the year, including Spirit Week in the fall. Mitchell offers fee-based extended hours for students before and after classes. The program provides a safe place for students in line with parent schedules.

The school used to be a warm and welcoming place. This year, there is a new principal (who started toward the end of last year) and the shift in culture is more than a little noticeable. My student is afraid of the new principal and talks about how the principal is always yelling and not using manne...

This school is unmatched in its level of heart and caring attitude for the students. It has impressively implemented the IB curriculum in Y5, which allows students to start learning a foreign language as early as Y5 and participate in music, art, and emotional-social language courses. The principals...

My children are having a great experience so far. Loving the changes in curriculum and curious where the IB program will take the school.
